A Tamaqua area man died on Friday in the St. Luke’s Hospital-Bethlehem, of injuries he sustained in a motor vehicle crash last Monday in Tamaqua.

Larry Hoppes, 74, of Atlas Road, died there at 3:51 p.m., according to Richard B. Pender, morgue operations manager for the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensics Center. The death was attributed to accidental multiple blunt force trauma due to the crash, he said.

The coroner’s office said the crash occurred on Dec. 23 at 1:06 p.m. in front of 307 Center St. Its release said Hoppes was the operator of a motor vehicle that left the roadway and struck a light pole.

Tamaqua Police are investigating the crash but were unavailable this morning to provide additional details of the incident.

Hoppes’ death is being handled by the E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Tamaqua. An online obituary notes he was the husband of Bonnie L. (Meeker) Hoppes.

A son of the late Leander and Irene (Padora) Hoppes, he was a 1963 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the West Penn Rod & Gun Club, and the West Penn Fire Company.

Hoppes was a self-employed machinist; an Eagle Scout and a scoutmaster of Troop 775 in Clamtown, for many years.
