Library news
The Tamaqua Public Library will host a book signing, featuring author Stanley “Porky” Szczecina on Saturday. The author of “Porky’s Shorts” will be at the library from 10 a.m. until noon. His newest book is a nonfiction collection of short stories.
The library also holds adult book discussions on the last Monday of each month. September’s book is “A Fall of Marigolds,” written by Susan Meissner. The novel weaves a connection between two women who once owned a scarf covered in bright marigolds and the tragedies they have witnessed.

Rush-Ryan seniors
The Rush-Ryan-Delano Senior Citizens met Sept. 11 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 43 members in attendance. President Robert Neifert conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “Feel Free to Ignite Your Friendship Candle.”
A moment of silence was held in memory of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Returning member Eleanor Schmerfeld and guest Thelma Paul were given warm welcomes. Nancy Eisley was added to the sick list. Gloria Gerhard agreed to take over the position of treasurer due to the illness of Larry Bower.
Birthday wishes were offered to Rose Vallee, Kim Usalis, Robert Neifert, Joyce Krell, Dorothy Fegley and Ruthann Feane.
Refreshments were served.
Upcoming trips include: Sept. 21, Texas Roadhouse Restaurant in Wyomissing; Oct. 15, Mohegan Sun Casino in Wilkes-Barre.
The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville and is open to anyone 55 or older.
Recovery service
The Tamaqua Ministerial Association and Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network are sponsoring a “Celebrate Recovery” service on Sunday at 223 E. Broad St. The ecumenical service will begin at 7 p.m. and will include praise and worship, testimonies from people in recovery and hope and encouragement from God’s Word.
The goal is to promote widespread observance of National Recovery Month. Organizers hope to offer support to people in recovery and draw attention to prevention, treatment and recovery support.
St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Also on Sunday, the bell choir will rehearse at 8 a.m., Sunday school and Confirmation classes meet at 10:30 a.m., adult class meets after the worship service.
Upcoming activities include: Monday, learning ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, finance committee meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, property committee meets at 7 p.m., angel choir practice at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m., chancel choir rehearses at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, newsletter assembly at 9:30 a.m.
The bell choir will meet at 8 a.m. on Sept. 9.
Zion Lewistown
Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this harvest Home Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.
The Zion fall conference will be held on Oct. 12 and 13.
St. Peter’s Union
The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. The service will include installation of Sunday school teachers and officers. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the church board will meet at 6:30 p.m.
Next week’s activities include: Monday, play rehearsal at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., Womens of St. Peter’s meet at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Confirmation class meets at 5 p.m.; Thursday, cherub choir practice is at 6:30 p.m., junior choir meets at 7 p.m., senior choir rehearsal at 7 p.m.
Calvary Lewistown
The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.
A prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 19.
