Sorority news

The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held an installation of officers on June 20. The ceremony was held at the Coal Street Pub in Middleport.

Officers for the 2018-19 service year are: Sue Hummel, president; Donna Gerber, vice president; Patti Burke, treasurer; Mary Machay, recording secretary; and Helen Walters, corresponding secretary.

On July 18, the sorority met at Skipper Dippers in Still Creek. President Hummel reviewed the meeting calendar and appointed committees.

Beginning Day will be celebrated on Aug. 18 with Marie Umbriac to serve as hostess. The event will be held at Lake Hauto, starting at 1 p.m.

The first regular meeting will be held Sept. 12 at the home of Patti Confer.

Garden gathering

Schuylkill County Master Gardeners will hold a celebration of gardening, food, art and music from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 18 at their demonstration garden, on the grounds of the First United Church of Christ, 110 Route 61, Schuylkill Haven, adjacent to the Penn State Schuylkill campus.

There will be plants and produce grown by master gardeners, along with cut flower arrangements, baked goods, food and refreshments available for purchase. There will also be food samples and a tomato tasting contest.

Artisans and other vendors will also be in attendance.

The master gardeners will be on hand to help with any gardening questions the public may have.

Calvary Lewistown

All services for Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle.

Pastor Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Sunday. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m. The service will include Holy Communion and special music by the Calvary Band.

Also on Sunday, the daylong Sunday school picnic will be held following the worship service with an evening service at 6 p.m.

The next prayer meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Aug. 8.

Ride Your Wheels to Church will be held on Aug. 12.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. The service will include Holy Communion. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Next week’s activities include: Monday, softball games at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at West Penn Park; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, retirees meet at 10 a.m.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.

The OWLS will meet at noon on Aug. 9.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.

Next week’s activities will include: Monday, worship and music committee meets at 3:30 p.m.; Wednesday, finance committee meets at 3:30 p.m.
