Back to school
The Tamaqua Elementary School will be conducting Back to School Nights on Aug. 20.
Sessions will follow a schedule, offering two sessions, to make it easier for parents who wish to attend.
At Tamaqua Elementary, the schedule will be: kindergarten, 6 or 7 p.m.; first grade, 6:15 or 6:45 p.m.; second grade, 6:30 or 7 p.m.; third grade, 7:30 or 8 p.m.; fourth grade, 7:45 or 8:15 p.m.; fifth grade, 8 or 8:30 p.m.
Homeroom lists are now posted on the school windows.
The list of needed supplies to start school may be found on the TEPTO Facebook page.

Bloodmobile
An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will visit the Tamaqua YMCA on Aug. 23. Hours will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Walk-in donors are welcome.
Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in general good health, is eligible to become a blood donor.

Country concerts
Heisler’s Dairy Bar in the Lewistown Valley is bringing back its series of free “Night in the Country Concerts.”
The next concert will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 12, featuring DJ Ann Marie Calabrese.
Additional events include: Aug. 19, 6 to 8 p.m., The New Individuals; Aug. 25, 6 to 9 p.m., Chase; Aug. 26, 6 to 9 p.m., Dave Evans.
TAFFN celebration
The Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network will host a free summer celebration event on Aug. 12 at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St.
The celebration will begin at 7 p.m. and include an ecumenical evening of music, fellowship and ice cream. Music will be provided by the Blue Mountain Community Church Praise Band. Speakers will include members of the Tamaqua Ministerial Association.
A freewill offering will be taken.

Sal news
The Tamaqua Salvation Army is preparing for the new school year by scheduling a book bag giveaway on Aug. 13 and 14. Hours both days will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Dates to sign up for holiday food baskets will be Oct. 9, 10 and 11.
St. John Lutheran
Pastor Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Sunday is also the deadline for items for the next edition of the newsletter.
Activities for next week include: Monday, church council meets at 7 p.m.; Thursday, newsletter assembly begins at 9:30 a.m., property committee meets at 7 p.m.
Zion Lewistown
Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.
On Aug. 14, the fundraising committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. and the preschool board will meet at 7:30 p.m.
St. Peter’s Union
The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.
Next week’s activities include: Monday, softball games at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at West Penn Park; Tuesday, newsletter deadline, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.
Calvary Lewistown
All services for Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle.
Pastor Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Ride Your Wheels to Church Sunday. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, a people’s choice hymnsing will be part of the evening service, which will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The next prayer meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Aug. 15.
The Lumber River Quartet will perform a concert of gospel music at 7 p.m. on Aug. 23.
