Tamaqua Drama Club

The Tamaqua Drama Club has selected the less well-known musical “Big Fish” for its spring production and is looking for donations of yellow or yellow/orange silk daffodils.

The plot of the play centers on traveling salesman Edward Bloom and his son, Will, and their relationship. As a child, Will enjoyed the fantastic stories told by his father, but adulthood has made him question many of those tales. Their relationship has become strained as Will prepares to marry. The story shifts between two time lines, the present-day reality and Edward’s storybook past. At its core, it examines the love/hate relationships within a family. It is suitable for family viewing, featuring several high-energy dance numbers and a number of mystical creatures.

Advance tickets for the public will be on sale from 9 a.m. to noon on March 9 and from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on March 12 and 13 in the Tamaqua Area Auditorium.

Performances will be 7 p.m. on March 15 and noon and 7 p.m. on March 16, in the auditorium.

Brownie Troop news

Brownie Troop 33013 is currently working on two projects — the continuation of the community garden and the creation/installation of a “little free library.”

The troop is currently collecting book donations, any and all genres, for the “library” and has a public garden planning meeting scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 3 at Hope and Coffee, 137 Pine St.

Spring planting day is scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 27, at the community garden, which is located at the corner of Lehigh Street and Cottage Avenue.

Library news

As February comes to a close, there are a few days left to take advantage of the Tamaqua Public Library’s gently used book sale.

The library is participating in Schuylkill County’s version of “cupcake wars.” The event will be held at the Fairlane Village Mall in Pottsville on March 10. Bakers and tasters are needed. Setups start at noon.

Leading up to the event, there is a cupcake coloring contest for children up to age 12. Coloring sheets are available at the library and must be returned by March 1.

There are small fees involved in the cupcake war. All proceeds will benefit Schuylkill County libraries.

Coffee with a cop

Tamaqua’s second “Coffee With a Cop” event will be held this Saturday, Feb. 23. Members of the Tamaqua Police Department, along with Mayor Nathan Gerace, will be at Hope and Coffee, 137 Pine St., from 9 to 11 a.m.

Mayor Gerace sees the event as a way to build better communication between the department and the community it serves.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the ministry council will meet at 11:45 a.m.

Activities for the next week include: Monday, Celebrate Recovery women’s training at 5 p.m., Celebrate Recovery men’s training at 5:15 p.m., Celebrate Recovery meets at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, TYM Remix meets at 6:30 p.m., worship practice is at 8 p.m.; Thursday, local outreach follow up meeting at 7 p.m.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. The service will include the reception of a new adult member.

Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

The evangelism PLUS meeting has been rescheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 27.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Also on Sunday, Confirmation and Sunday school classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Tuesday, learning ministry meeting; Thursday, angel choir rehearses at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m. and chancel choir practices at 7:30 p.m.

The bell choir will rehearse at 8 a.m. on March 3.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Res Poole will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Church, West Penn. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the junior choir will rehearse at 11 a.m., Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, Confirmation class meets at 5 p.m.; Thursday, senior choir meets at 7:30 p.m.

Calvary Lewistown

The Rev. Susan Moore will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, a Bible study session will be held at 6:30 p.m.

A prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27.
