Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met Jan. 10 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 47 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker opened the meeting with the reading of “A New Year’s Prayer.”

A moment of silence was held in memory of Mary Herbig. Joe Bednarik, Nancy Gerber, Anna Mae Yushinsky, Margie Skymba and Paul and Marlene Randig were added to the sick list.

Membership dues for 2019 are now being accepted.

The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA.

Tree collecting

The Borough of Tamaqua Street Department will be collecting used, unwanted Christmas trees throughout the month of January.

Residents should place their trees at the curb for pickup on their garbage collection day. Christmas trees must be free of tinsel and other decorations.

The street department will check each street on garbage days and collect trees as time and weather permits.

No trees will be collected after Jan. 31.

Residents may also drop off their Christmas trees behind the Tamaqua Borough garage at 421 Rear E. Broad St.

Chamber breakfast

The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce will present its first breakfast seminar of 2019 at 8 a.m. Jan. 25 at the Tamaqua Community Arts Center.

The topics of conversation will be ways to stay and play in Tamaqua, an overview on efforts to attract overnight accommodations in and around Tamaqua, and the impacts on the business community. Guest speakers Sen. David Argall and Micah Gursky of the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership will provide updates on these and other CRIZ projects.

Reservations are requested and may be made by calling 570-668-1880 or emailing chamber@tamaqua.net.

Deadline for reservations is Jan. 17.

The art center is located at 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church. Sunday school classes are held at 9:30 a.m.

Hope in the Mountains, a Nar-Anon Family Group, meetings are held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursdays. For more information, call 570-778-5098.

A congregational meeting will be held following the worship service on Feb. 6.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:15 a.m.

The movie “Is Genesis History” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 26.

A congregational meeting will be held following the worship service on Jan. 27.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also this Sunday, TYM REMIX staff will meet at 11:45 a.m. and the monthly service at the Hometown Nursing Center will be held at 2:30 p.m.

Activities for the next week include: Monday, Celebrate Recovery women’s training at 5 p.m., Celebrate Recovery men’s training at 5:15 p.m., Celebrate Recovery meets at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, TYM Remix meets at 6:30 p.m., worship practice is at 8 p.m.; Thursday, coffee and conversation at 7 p.m., at Hope and Coffee, membership meeting at 7 p.m.
