Summer quest
The Tamaqua Public Library has summer reading programs for all ages. Summer Quest 2018 has been divided into three age categories, all based on the theme “Libraries Rock.”
There is a preschool program for children up to the age of 5. Participants will meet once a week for six weeks, beginning June 19. Sessions will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
For readers between the ages of 6 and 12, the Summer Quest program will begin June 18. Sessions will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. every Monday for six consecutive weeks.
The 2018 Young Adult Summer Reading program will be held every other Friday from 3 to 4:30 p.m., starting June 15. Topics for discussion will include Arthurian legend on June 15; Hamilton on June 29; comic history on July 13; music on July 27; mental health on Aug. 10; animé and manga on Aug. 24.

Sports camp
Revive Community Fellowship will be conducting free sports camps at two Tamaqua locations on June 18.
A morning session will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the South Ward Playground, located on Penn Street.
Later that day, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., the camps will be held at the Dutch Hill Ball field, Columbia and Biddle streets.
There are no fees and the camps are open to the public.
Active shooter
An active shooter training seminar is being organized for June 27 in Zion’s Stone Church, New Ringgold. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. and is open to the public, ages 12 and up. It will be presented by retired Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Robert Davis.

Out of the darkness
Safer Streets for Tamaqua’s Little Feet will hold its Second Annual Out of the Darkness, Into the Light candlelight walk on July 22. This year’s special guest speaker will be Vance Johnson, former NFL football wide receiver.
The event, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Bungalow Park, is part of the group’s efforts to provide awareness and support in the fight against opioid drug addiction. The focus will be honoring those taken too soon and bring awareness of the dangers of addiction, a “disease that is taking lives and destroying communities.”
In addition to Johnson’s motivational talk, there will be food, music, T-shirts, Chinese lanterns and other speakers.
Rain date will be July 23.
St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Activities for next week will include: Monday, church council meets at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, Learning Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, stewardship committee meets at 7 p.m.
Zion Lewistown
Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday at Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. The service will include graduate recognition. Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.
Activities for next week include: Monday through Friday, VBS from 6 to 8:15 p.m. at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle; Thursday, OWLS meet at noon.
St. Peter’s Union
The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Senior Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. The service will include a Joyous Noise Offering. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the search committee will meet at 6 p.m., Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.
Next week’s activities include: Monday, softball games, 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., at West Penn Park; Tuesday, newsletter deadline, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, retirees meet at 10 a.m.
