Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club will hold its first meeting of 2018 at 7 p.m. March 27. The meeting will be held in the social hall at Zion Church of the Lewistown Valley.

Guest speaker Ted Chrin will provide a program on “Pysanky.”

New members are always welcome.

Hunger walk

Tamaqua’s 2018 Hunger Weekend will be held May 4, 5 and 6, ending with a Hunger Walk on May 6. A combined effort of the Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network and the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership, the three-day event will benefit Tamaqua’s three food pantries — Primitive Methodist Church, Trinity United Church of Christ and the Tamaqua Salvation Army.

It’s not too early to think about ways to raise funds, collect nonperishable food items or organize a walking team.

Hometown auxiliary

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Hometown Fire Company will meet at Basile’s Restaurant, Route 309, on April 2. Dinner on your own will be at 6 p.m., with the meeting scheduled for 7 p.m.

Elks officers

An installation of officers for the Tamaqua BPO Elks Lodge 592 will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday. The evening will include a prime rib dinner and the public is welcome to attend.

Tamaqua seniors

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met March 15 at the Tamaqua YMCA with 45 members in attendance. President Melody Weicker conducted the business session after opening the meeting with the invocation “Keep Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”

Three new members, Nancy Nunemacher, Fred and Shirley Herb, were given warm welcomes.

Upcoming events include a basket raffle at noon on April 19 and a trip to Mohegan Sun in Wilkes-Barre on April 20.

The group is open to anyone 55 or older, meeting at 1 p.m. every Thursday at the YMCA.

Calvary Lewistown

The Rev. Philip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Palm Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the Sunday school class will present the annual Easter program at 6:30 p.m. The Calvary Band will perform during the program.

The next family movie night will be held on March 23. The film will be “Elizabeth’s Gift.” The movie will begin at 7 p.m. The public is welcome.

The Maundy Thursday service will be held at 7:15 p.m. March 29 at Calvary. The Rev. Jim Williams will be the guest speaker.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 and 10:30 a.m. worship services this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the commission meeting will be held at 11:45 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Monday, Celebrate Recovery men’s training at 5:30 p.m., Celebrate Recovery meets at 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, Celebrate Recovery women’s training at 10 a.m., TYM REMIX meets at 6:30 p.m., TYM staff meeting at 8 p.m., worship practice for Maundy Thursday at 8 p.m.; Maundy Thursday service of the Lord’s Supper at 7 p.m.; Good Friday, Tenebrae service at 7 p.m.; Saturday, men’s Easter music practice at 10 a.m.

Primitive Methodist

Pastor Rick Clemson will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service on Sunday in American Primitive Methodist Church.

Hope in the Mountains NFG is held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every Thursday.

A Holy Thursday service will be held at 7 p.m. on March 29. The service will include Holy Communion.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Palm Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, a Confirmation stewardship bazaar will begin at 10:30 a.m.; the junior choir will rehearse at 11 a.m.; Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, senior choir rehearsal will be at 7:30 p.m.; Maundy Thursday Tenebrae service at 7:30 p.m.; Good Friday service at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday school egg hunt at 1 p.m.

Two services will be held on Easter Sunday, at 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Both services will include Holy Communion.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. Palm Sunday service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.

Also on Sunday, bells will rehearse at 8 a.m., Confirmation and Sunday school classes following the service.

Next week, the midweek Lenten service will be held at 7 p.m. at Zion’s; Holy Thursday, First Holy Communion will be celebrated during the 7 p.m. service; Good Friday community service at noon at Trinity United Church of Christ; Stations of the Cross will be held at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Easter vigil at 7 p.m.
