Spirit of Christmas
Voting is now underway for the Little Miss Spirit of Christmas contest. Seven elementary school age girls from throughout the greater Tamaqua area have submitted photos and essays, which will be on display through Nov. 17 at the Wells Fargo Bank branch in Tamaqua. Ballots are available from the bank tellers. There is a monetary donation required to vote.
The winner will take part in many of the festivities planned for Spirit of Christmas weekend, including the Santa parade.
The 2017 Spirit of Christmas Festival will be held the weekend of Nov. 29 through Dec. 3. The annual event is sponsored by the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership.
Rush-Ryan seniors
The Rush, Ryan and Delano Senior Citizens Inc. met Nov. 14 at the Ryan Township Fire Company with 51 members in attendance. President Bill Morrison conducted the business session and provided the inspirational reading “Running Life’s Race.”
Jayne McLaughlin and Pauline Fenstermacher were added to the sick list. new member Shirley Kaiser was given a warm welcome.
Joan Breslin of the Schuylkill Transportation System, spoke to the group about the countywide public transportation system, which was created in 1981. She offered tips on using the service to the seniors’ best advantage.
Upcoming events were discussed, including a Dec. 12 Christmas party at Capriotti’s in McAdoo.
The group meets the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the Ryan Township Fire Company in Barnesville.
Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join.
The next meeting will be held on Nov. 28.
Older and bolder
The Tamaqua Salvation Army’s Older and Bolder Bell Choir has several performances scheduled in December.
The group will ring in the holidays on Dec. 4 at three places: 10 a.m. at the Hometown Nursing Center, 11 a.m. at the Tamaqua ABC High Rise and noon at the Majestic House Apartments.
Two performances will be on Dec. 5: noon at St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale and at 2:30 p.m. at Maple Shade Meadows in Nesquehoning.
The group will have lunch at Gramma’s Restaurant in Pottsville on Dec. 8 before performing at York terrace at 1:30 p.m.
On Dec. 15, the group will meet at 11 a.m. at Union Station in Pottsville, have lunch at 11:15 a.m. and then perform at the station from noon to 3 p.m.
St. Peter’s Union
The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. The service will include a Women of St. Peter’s Thankoffering. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class meets at 11:15 a.m., Cub and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.
Next week’s activities include: Monday, church board work session will start at 5 p.m., followed by a board meeting at 6 p.m.; Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., women meet at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, filling order pickup from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thanksgiving Eve service at 7 p.m.
St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at this Sunday’s 9:15 a.m. worship service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will be followed by a congregational meeting.
The Confirmation class will meet at 10 a.m. on Nov. 18.
