Spirit of Christmas

Tamaqua’s 2017 Spirit of Christmas Festival will be held the weekend of Nov. 29 through Dec. 3. The annual event is sponsored by the Tamaqua Area Community Partnership.

Voting is now underway for the Little Miss Spirit of Christmas contest. Seven elementary school age girls from throughout the greater Tamaqua area have submitted photos and essays, which will be on display through Nov. 17 at the Wells Fargo Bank branch in Tamaqua. Ballots are available from the bank tellers. There is a monetary donation required to vote.

The winner will take part in many of the festivities planned for Spirit of Christmas weekend, including the Santa parade.

Veterans Day

Tamaqua American Legion Post 173 will host its annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday. Staging will begin at 9 a.m. at the former Maff Motors building in the 900 block of East Broad Street.

The line of march will head west on Broad Street, dispersing in the area of Lehigh Street.

Leading the parade, behind the Tamaqua American Legion Color Guard, will be parade grand marshal Robert O. Rarick, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Following the parade, a brief service will be held in front of the Legion post at 206 W. Broad St.

Parking will be banned along the parade route.

Parade organizers encourage everyone to be part of the event, either by walking, driving or riding in the parade. All veterans, their family members, individuals, businesses, civic groups, fire companies, youth groups, clubs, organizations, military vehicles and antique car enthusiasts are welcome. Simply show your support by taking part in the parade.
