Tamaqua news for Nov. 9
Art reception
The Tamaqua Historical Society will host an art reception and exhibit, featuring the work of J.G. Scott, from 5-9 p.m. Saturday.
The reception will be held in conjunction with the grand opening of the new Tamaqua Museum Annex and Gallery at 114 W. Broad St.
The art exhibit features select works Scott created from the 1920s through the 1950s. Once a superintendent of the former Coaldale State General Hospital, Scott created more than 2,500 valentines for the Gibson card company.
There will be free refreshments.
The public is welcome to attend.
Heart to heart
The Tamaqua Heart to Heart Women’s Ministry meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA, 1201 E. Broad St.
Each meeting includes desserts, fellowship and Bible study.

West Penn Lions
The West Penn Lions Club meets the first and third Wednesdays of each month as they work toward helping others, both locally and nationally.
Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. at the West Penn Township Annex, located just off Route 309. For further information, call 570-386-2272.
Health series
St. Luke’s Miners Campus in Coaldale is sponsoring a series of continuing education sessions on a variety of health topics. Sessions are held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. the third Friday of every month in the first floor community room.
The Nov. 17 session is themed “Fancy That Footwork” and will focus on ways foot health care and awareness.
The December session will concentrate on the medical condition A-Fib.

Calvary Evangelical
The Rev. Philip Sabas will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Calvary Evangelical Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, a singalong time of praise will be held at 6:30 p.m.
The next prayer meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 14.
A Thanksgiving and Harvest service will be celebrated at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 19. The service will be followed by a time of fellowship and refreshments.
St. Peter’s Union
The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. The service will include recognition of Veterans Day. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class meets at 11:15 a.m., preschool basket raffle from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., filling orders are due, Cub and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.
Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.; Wednesday, cherub choir meets at 6:30 p.m., junior choir rehearses at 7 p.m., senior choir practice is at 7:30 p.m.
St. John Lutheran
The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at this Sunday’s 9:15 a.m. worship service in St. John’s Lutheran Church. The service will include Holy Communion.
Also on Sunday, Confirmation and Sunday school classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.
Activities for next week include: Monday, church council meets at 7 p.m.; Thursday, property committee meets at 7 p.m., angel choir rehearses at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m. and chancel choir practice is at 7:30 p.m.
