Tamaqua Borough Council on Tuesday night approved an annual salary of $72,000 for police Chief Henry Woods, following his hiring in June.

Council President David Mace apologized for the oversight of not setting the salary when he was hired.

A 27-year veteran of the department, Woods has served as the department’s criminal investigator since his promotion to corporal in 2007.

He is replacing Rick Weaver, who retired in March.

Council also hired Abviud Carvajal as a part-time police officer. Woods spoke highly of Carvajal, telling council that although he is a recent graduate of the police academy, he had glowing recommendations and had won an award while at the academy for being highly motivated.

Council approved a request for the civil service commission patrolman test/corporal promotion test to be given in the near future.
