Thorpe gets two bids for Phoenix Co.

Published April 06. 2018 11:53PM

Jim Thorpe Borough opened the only two bids it received for the Phoenix Hose Company building Thursday night.

Council voted last fall to put the station up for sale after equipment was moved out of the building and over to the Fairview Hose Company on the east side of town.

Kevin McArdle bid $140,000 on the building, located at 173 W. Broadway. Whole Sargent Holdings LLC bid $103,300.

Following the bid opening, council said it would discuss the matter in an executive session.

Borough Manager Maureen Sterner said Friday that a motion related to the Phoenix sale would be on the agenda for the April 12 council meeting.

The decision to sell the building had been several years in the making.

Phoenix personnel noticed several cracks in the station’s floor in November 2014 and an engineer’s evaluation confirmed the structure was failing.

In a short time, the crack went from a quarter-inch to an inch.

An estimate at that time had it costing $115,000 just to fill the basement in for the front third of the firehouse.

Carbon County also recently moved its District 17 fourth ward polling place from the Phoenix Fire Company to the Marion Hose Company on West Broadway.
