Three charged in Tobyhanna shooting
Three people face charges of criminal homicide for a Sunday night shooting at the Pocono Country Place E-Club house that started over a bottle of Hennessey.
Pocono Mountain Regional Police were dispatched to Winter Drive and Pembrook Drive in Coolbaugh Township at 10:45 p.m., when they found a Honda sedan in a ditch. Police said a deceased man, later identified as Daniel Santana, was slumped over the steering wheel of the vehicle, which had been shot several times. Jonathan Nazario and Angel Rodriguez, both passengers in the vehicle, told police they were robbed earlier in the evening by three men, two of whom were armed with handguns.
Police said the men with handguns were Dahvaun Ewin, 20, of Newport News, Virginia, and Naslem Mayo, 18, of Hampton, Virginia, who along with Shyheem Mitchell of Tobyhanna, 23, were charged with homicide.
Mayo lifted up his shirt, showed the men his gun and demanded the bottle of Hennessey from them.
After giving the men the bottle of Hennessey, Nazario and Rodriguez told police, they left the park.
Santana, Rodriguez and Nazario then drove to a residence on Winter Drive, which they said was affiliated with the men who robbed them. When the vehicle came under gunfire, Santana was struck and became unresponsive, while Rodriguez and Nazario fled the scene.
Detectives said Santana’s vehicle was struck at least twice, and they also found evidence of other bullet rounds entering the passenger compartment.
Officers searched the Winter Drive property and found spent .357 sig and 9 mm casings in the driveway, in addition to live 9 mm rounds in the home belonging to Mayo.
Santana’s cause of death was determined to be gunshot wounds to the head and torso.
Another search warrant at a residence on Greenbriar Circle resulted in two handguns, a Glock .357 sig and a Ruger 9 mm pistol, tied up in a black garbage bag and hidden under a tarp. The Glock was reported stolen in 2017 by the Virginia Beach Police Department.
Investigators said Ewin fired the shots that hit Santana. Malik Pruitt, 18, of Albrightsville, who police said gave false statements to police and provided a false alibi for Mitchell, is also being charged as a principal and accomplice to robbery.
While at police headquarters, Innet Torress Hadnott, 39, of Effort, arrived after police said she assaulted Pruitt’s father.
Police said Hadnott was intoxicated and drove to the police station with her 2-year-old daughter in the car. Police said she also kicked an officer and attempted to head-butt them while being taken into custody.
