EAST PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (AP) — Police have charged a truck driver involved in a Rhode Island crash last year that killed two Massachusetts residents.

State police say 43-year-old Ilkham Akhmedov, of Scranton, Pennsylvania, was fatigued and drove more hours than allowed before the fatal crash in October 2017.

His attorney pleaded not guilty on his behalf Monday to charges of driving to endanger resulting in death. He was freed on $10,000 bond. The attorney didn’t comment.

Authorities say Akhmedov crashed into a van on Interstate 195 in East Providence and crushed it between another tractor-trailer.

The van’s passengers, 40-year-old Steven Magan, of Palmer, Massachusetts, and 38-year-old Axel Moran, of Marlborough, Massachusetts, died.

Police say traffic was at a standstill at the time, and Akhmedov failed to try to avoid the collision.
