VFW buys new handguns for Nesquehoning police

Nesquehoning Police Department has new handguns and they didn’t cost taxpayers a dime.
Twelve new .40-caliber, SIG Sauer P320 model guns were purchased for the police by the Nesquehoning VFW Post 8008.
Chief of Police Sean Smith said the guns cost $8,000. He called them “the Cadillac” of handguns.
He said it was the largest such gift ever to the police department.
Smith said, “The VFW has always been a big supporter of our police department. We help them with the Memorial Day Parade and other special events.”
He said the police and VFW Post have been working together for the past 19 years.
Several years ago, they purchased new stun guns for the police, upgrading an outdated version they previously had.
With the handgun purchase, every member of the department received a new gun. There are extras to use when some are out of service.
Smith attended a meeting of the VFW members on Tuesday and personally thanked them for their contribution.
He said, “It’s incredible. I don’t know of any other department in the area that has this kind of support.”
VFW Commander Matthew DeHart said it is a show of appreciation by the Post members for the police officers.
