VFW names Nesquehoning Officer of the Year
Nesquehoning police officer Carl Breiner has seen a lot in the 19 years he served on the borough’s force.
“It’s been good for the most part,” he said. “It’s been a wild ride because there are times when it is kind of quiet, but that doesn’t last long.”
Over the nearly two decades, Breiner said that what police are encountering has changed drastically with the advent of social media and the growing opioid and methamphetamine epidemic.
But one thing is for sure, Breiner, as well as the officers that make up the Nesquehoning police department, have common goals when wearing their badge: Serve the community and keep the residents safe.
Because of his dedication, the Nesquehoning VFW Post 8008 recently honored Breiner with the Officer of the Year award.
“I am very honored,” he said.
Craig Strohl, quartermaster of the Nesquehoning VFW, said that supporting the local police, fire departments and emergency medical services helps the community as a whole.
“We appreciate the support you guys give us here in town,” Strohl said. “It is good to support each other and the community. That’s why we recognize great officers.”
Strohl, who served on the police force in 2003, said Breiner immediately came to mind for the award when they began the consideration process.
Commander Matthew DeHart said this was one of a number of awards the VFW is giving out.
In addition, the post recently presented fellow VFW member Ralph Clay with the Teacher of the Year award. Clay serves as a teacher in the Jim Thorpe Area School District.
