Walnutport has filled a vacancy on borough council brought on by the passing of a former council member earlier this month.

At its workshop session on Thursday, council on a 6-0 vote approved a resolution to appoint Iris Blum to the empty seat.

Upon her appointment, Blum was sworn in by borough Mayor Wayne Weidner and took her seat on council.

Council President William Turk congratulated Blum on her appointment.

Blum, retired, said she had been a paralegal, and has lived in the borough since 1972.

After the meeting, she said, “Hopefully I can benefit and I can help and be more aware of what’s going on,” Blum said. “Hopefully I can help the borough with things that need to be done.”

Blum was one of two candidates who applied for the post.

The other was James Pollock.

Councilwoman Jennifer Wentz thanked Pollock for applying for the post as well.

The seat became open after longtime Councilwoman Joan Rehrig passed away Jan. 2.

Up until her passing, Rehrig, 77, was a sitting member on council.

Rehrig served on council for about 30 years.
