Walnutport man asks for update on proposed volleyball court

A Walnutport man has encouraged the borough to ramp up its efforts to add a volleyball court as a recreational activity.

Resident Donald Eckhart told council at its workshop on Thursday that he believes it’s time for the borough to get the project started.

“I think it wouldn’t be a bad idea to pick a tentative starting date that we can aim for,” Eckhart said. “Right now, I don’t know where it’s headed.”

Councilman Michael Gaston said that while he understood Eckhart’s concern, council didn’t want to do anything in the winter due to the Christmas trees that were set up in the park.

Borough grant coordinator Michael Wentz said the borough has a commitment from Haines & Kibblehouse Inc. to donate some sand and stone for the proposed volleyball court.

It was also noted that Eckhart — who serves on the borough’s recreation committee — previously made a $2,000 donation toward a volleyball court.

Borough Mayor Wayne Weidner then asked council where the rest of the money would come from to help see the project to fruition.

Gaston explained what’s needed material wise.

“It’s mainly stone and sand,” he said. “Sand is the most expensive item to get it here.”

Wentz said the sand will either come from Maryland or New Jersey, as it’s beach sand.

After the meeting, he said there are grants pending for the volleyball court.
