Weissport’s tight budget passed with no tax hike
Weissport gave final approval to its 2018 budget on Friday.
Although the spending plan ends year with a deficit, the borough council held the line on taxes.
The budget is based on 10.9 mills. Council members said the last time there was a tax increase was 2012.
The fiscal report was passed by a 4-0 vote. Council member Brenda Leiby was absent.
Expected expenditures total $148,622, which is $19,965 less than income.
Secretary-Treasurer Bill Donovan said this is because $8,500 has been budgeted to repair the roof at the borough hall and because of expected funding of a Community Development Block Grant totaling $12,500.
The main source of funding for the borough is real estate taxes, which totals $57,112. Earned Income Tax, which is at 0.5 percent, brings in $39,453.
Two people attended their final meetings as council members.
Gene Kershner, council president, has served eight consecutive years but had been on the council before to that. He chose not to run for re-election last year.
Tammy Moyer, who was appointed in December, sat in on her final meeting.
Kershner thanked his peers at the conclusion of the meeting for “a lot of good memories.”
