Hoagie sale

The Western Pocono Lions Club is selling hoagies through Oct. 5. Pickup time is set for 3 p.m. Oct. 17, at Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville.

Banned books

The Western Pocono Community Library is celebrating Banned Books Week through Saturday.

At 6:30 tonight there will be a discussion of Madeline L’Engle’s banned book: “A Wrinkle in Time.”

Mission meal

West End Mission will be serving its Mission Meal at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

PTO meeting

Pleasant Valley Intermediate School’s PTO is slated to meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

PV Board

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Chestnuthill seniors

Lunchtime on Friday brings Seniors who meet at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville an opportunity to enjoy Italian fish over orzo.

They must order it with their site manager at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.

The menu for Oct. 3 is not yet posted.

CWU events

Friday at 1:30 p.m. Church Women United will meet for a business meeting in the Eisenmann Room on the second floor in the Hughes Library, Stroudsburg.

At 4 p.m. on Sunday, at Parkside Chapel, Route 191, there will be a hymn sing. The CWU secretary reminds folks that this is a summer chapel, so there is no electricity.

Eldred cleanup

On Saturday, Eldred Township is participating in the countywide Pick Up the Poconos Event. Volunteers will be cleaning up the litter along Upper 57 and Gower roads.

Folks can sign up to help at https://www.poconomountains.com/pick-up-the-poconos.

At the Community Center, from 8:30 a.m. until noon, there will be dumpsters available for household items too large for the trash.

There is a cost for some items. Call the township for more information.

Saturday is also the final day for electronics recycling for 2018.

Post cleanup

American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert is having its monthly cleanup day Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Pet blessing

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will be the site of a pet blessing at 10 a.m. this Saturday, in front of the church by the Jesus statue.

Chicken barbecue

Effort UMC is hosting its chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, beginning with takeouts only, available beginning at 1 p.m. Dine-in starts at 3 p.m. Eat-in and takeouts available through 7 p.m. or until sold out.

Benefit pull

Pocono Old-Tyme is hosting its benefit pull on Saturday.

Hook your tractors and trucks to help out someone local in need. Contact Dennis Borger, John Cady or Roger Heckman if you can help us out.

Healing services

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will hold two healing services on Sunday. They are at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. Confirmation class is at 9 a.m.

At 2 p.m., church members will bring a Communion service to the Getz Home in Jonas.

Missionary speaker

St. Peter’s United Methodist Church will welcome local resident Jessica Lewis into the sanctuary on Sunday to speak of her missionary service in Kazakhstan.

Jessica serves through the Navigators ministry to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ into the world. Currently on leave, Jessica will share her message at the 10 a.m. worship service.

All of the community is invited to hear her speak and to fellowship with the people of St. Peter’s UMC. St. Peter’s UMC is located at 924 Route 115, Saylorsburg, next to Dollar General.

Community day

Chestnuthill Community Day is being held from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Route 715, Brodheadsville.

It will include performances by Out of the Blue from noon to 1:15 p.m.; Double Shot from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m.; and Bandana Brothers, from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.; as well as demonstrations by Cartesion Dance Academy at 1 p.m.; West End Academy of Dance at 2 p.m.; and Pocono Academy of Dance at 3 p.m.

A 3 on 3 basketball tournament will be part of the special day. It will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. There is a cost.

Preregistration required. Teams can register anytime at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, or at the Chestnuthill Park Building on Friday, from 4 to 6 p.m. or by mail. Make checks payable to WEPOSC, P.O. Box 243, Brodheadsville, PA 18322.

GriefShare begins

GriefShare, a 13-week recovery program that offers support and resources to all who are grieving, will be offered at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church beginning this Sunday. The program is timed to offer guidance and support through the difficult holiday season. The program will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. each Sunday afternoon. There is a requested donation to cover the cost of the workbook. The 13 sessions will be facilitated by Marsha Beers.

Bishop visits

Bishop will be at Effort UMC on Monday at 7 p.m. as part of Bishop Day on the District to visit and meet with laity. All are welcome to attend.

StrongWomen

To sign up for the Monroe County Eldred/Kunkletown event, which is listed as a StrongWomen/Growing Stronger 6-Week Challenge, go to https://extension.psu.edu/strongwomen-growing-stronger-challenge.

The class, for women 45 and older will begin on Tuesday, with the classes at the Eldred Township Community Center from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays.

There is a fee for this program which will instruct women on nutrition and fitness as they age.

Gourd artists

Two locally known gourd artists are being featured at the Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center’s Art Opening, Working with Nature’s Canvas. It runs from Oct. 2 through Oct. 31.

The artists, both with West End ties, will be feted at an opening reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 6.

Claudia Hill, a West End resident for many years, feels gourds are the perfect canvas. Any art form — pyrography, beading, needlework, painting, sculpting, basketry, etc. — can be spectacular using a gourd. She is the vice president of the Pennsylvania Gourd Society, a Pennsylvania Gourd Fest Committee member, and a member of the New York and Virginia Gourd Societies.

Susan Pekala, a former Pleasant Valley teacher, first became interested in gourds 10 years ago while attending the Pennsylvania Gourd Festival, where she learned how to carve gourds. She is a member of the American Gourd Society, the Virginia Gourd Society, and the Pennsylvania Gourd Society.

Chestnuthill supers

The Chestnuthill Township board of supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township municipal building in Brodheadsville.

Beef dinner

An autumn roast beef dinner will be held at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church in Saylorsburg on Oct. 6.

Dine in from 3:30 to 7 p.m. or take out from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

The dinner is served family style and is a complete meal including homemade desserts. The sanctuary is air-conditioned. The parking lot is spacious.

Eldred Historical

The Eldred Township Historical Society’s Annual Gift Card Bingo will be held on Oct. 7 at St. Matthew’s Church in Kunkletown. Doors open at noon; bingo starts at 1 p.m. Food will be available.

The October meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Frantz Schoolhouse on Church Road, opposite Keystone Lane. As there is no heat in the building, please dress accordingly.

The historical society is seeking new members. If anyone is interested in the history of Eldred Township or becoming involved in the restoration of the Old Post Office, come to a meeting.

Church reunion

Salem United Church of Christ, Gilbert, is holding a church family reunion and a dedication of the new look of the church with the work that has been done in the sanctuary on Oct. 14.

Pastor Randy Lentz will lead the 10 a.m. worship service.

It will be followed by a light luncheon in the Social Hall.

Anyone who has ever been a visitor, a Sunday school student, or a teacher, was confirmed at Salem, or is a former member or friend, is invited.

An RSVP for the luncheon is requested by Oct. 8. Call the church office at 610-681-4733 to RSVP.

Bog walks

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center offers guided weekly Tannersville Bog walks Wednesdays through Nov. 7. These 2½ hour walks begin at 1 p.m. and will be guided by an environmental educator from the center who will teach attendees about the bog, a unique boreal bog for this area, owned by the Nature Conservancy. The bog is filled with bird songs and interesting insect eating plants.

Participants should meet at the bog parking lot by 1 p.m.
