Authors & Artists

PVI students and families may be part of a Red Carpet Event as Authors and Artists is on the school’s calendar from 5 to 7 p.m., tonight.

Joint service

St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown is the host church for the joint Lenten services tonight.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. with soup and the worship service is at 7 p.m. In between is the joint choir practice.

Effort UMC will have midweek Lenten service at 7 p.m.

Our Lady Queen of Peace, Gilbert, has been sponsoring a Life in the Spirit six-week seminar. To register, contact Jacki Douglas at 610-681-6137, ext. 114, or at douglas@qopchurch.org. The church has also been doing the Stations of the Cross at 7 p.m. during this Lenten season.

Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville holds its Lenten supper and discussion at 6 p.m. The Lenten worship follows at 7:30 p.m.

Eldred Supervisors

The Eldred Board of Supervisors meets at 7 p.m. today at the township municipal building on Kunkletown Road.

Home Association

The West End Home Association for American Legion Post 927 meets at 7:30 tonight.

Busy firefighters

West End Fire Company Chief Don Zipp reports 40 calls for service for the company.

He explains that those calls are down 40 percent versus last year for the month. This, he says, is likely due to the blizzard that the area had last year.

That allowed the company to complete all of the needed annual training for CPR, First Aid, and Hazardous materials.

Just days ago the fire company held its swearing-in ceremony, along with the awards banquet.

The following received awards from their peers: Camden Kline, Junior Firefighter of the Year; Salvatore Sacco, Rookie Firefighter of the Year; Joe Kramer, Firefighter of the Year; and Gerry Taylor, Fire Service Leadership Award.

In addition, the volunteers spent the past two weeks preparing for the brush fire season which is here, and members requalified on the Utility Terrain Vehicles and the wildfire equipment.

Family Night

Planet Learn Kindergarten Family Night is being held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Pleasant Valley Elementary School.

Band parents meet

The Pleasant Valley Band Parents meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the high school band room.

Legion meeting

American Legion Post 927 will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Legion home in Gilbert.

Chestnuthill Seniors

After the opening at 9 a.m. at the Chestnuthill Seniors, part of Monroe County Seniors, meeting at Zion Lutheran Church’s Fellowship Hall Wednesdays and Fridays, Friday’s coffee and tea at 9 a.m. will be followed by Health and Wellness at 9 a.m. Seniors are for the Birds is the topic.

On April 10, the 10:30 a.m. event is: Current Events.

The meal choice for Friday’s lunch, the light fare, is tuna antipasto, cucumber salad, sliced peaches, whole grain bread and rice pudding. The regular fare menu offers garlic broccoli with grain shell pasta, red cabbage and carrots/mango.

The next Wednesday offering is pasta and vegetable salad, coleslaw, banana with jello pudding. The regular fare is chicken piccata, green beans, yellow squash, whole grain bread and a tangerine.

Orders for lunch should be called into the site manager at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.

A minimal donation is requested.

Park cleanup

From 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, there will be a park cleanup at the West End Regional Park, 578 Evergreen Hollow Road, Saylorsburg. Volunteers are being sought. Litter and trash from around the park area will be cleaned up. Gloves, vests and bags will be provided.

This is a great community project for individuals, families and organizations. Call 570-992-9733 to register.

Art Opening

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center’s Art Opening of Kathleen Gubitosi’s Brush strokes of Wildlife is being held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Kathleen’s passion and love of wildlife and of nature is exhibited through her very first show at Kettle Creek. The exhibit runs through April 30.

Worship walk

The next worship walk will be at the West End Regional Park in Effort at 1 p.m.

Outreach auction

Effort UMC is hosting its Missions Outreach auction on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.

Doors will open at 5 p.m.; setup for the event begins at 3 p.m. for volunteers.

Snacks will be provided, but attendees should feel free to bring something to share.

The youth from REACH are willing to help with being runners.

And the congregation will welcome the Zimmerman mission family from Texas near the border of Mexico. Previously they served in Bolivia.

Holy Communion

McMichaels UMC will offer Holy Communion during its 9 a.m. worship service.

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will offer Holy Communion at its 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. services on Sunday.

In between there will be Confirmation at 9 a.m.

SAL meeting

The Sons of the American Legion will hold its meeting at 11 a.m. Sunday.

UMW meeting

The Effort UMC’s group of United Methodist Women will meet at 7 p.m. Monday.

Julie Foley will present a program on environmental issues and recycling. The group will also be finalizing the plans for the May 18 flea market.

Devotions will be provided by Lisa Magill, and hostesses for the evening will be Sharon Gerhart and Gail Schellman.

All Sports Club

Pleasant Valley’s All Sports Club meets at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school library.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran Church’s Knit & Crochet will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Newcomers are welcome. Instructions, needles and other supplies can be provided.

Korean Vets

The Korean War Veterans group will hold its meeting at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post Home in Gilbert.

OTOH meeting

Operation Touch of Home will have a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post 927, Route 209, Gilbert.

Assistance given

The Monroe County Area Agency on Aging is sponsoring community sites to assist people with completing the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Forms.

In the West End it will be provided from 9 to 11 a.m. April 10 at the Chestnuthill Senior Center.

Make sure to bring proof of income, rent receipts if renting, paid property taxes if one owns his/her home and the property tax/rent rebate form (PA-1000) if one was mailed to the home.

Copies of the tax/rent rebate form will be available to those who do not have a copy.

Notary services will not be available, so if one does not have all of the rent receipts for 2018, the application will have to be notarized after it is completed.

Garden Club meets

The Monroe County Garden Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. April 10 at the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center, 3080 Running Valley Road, Stroudsburg.

The guest speaker will be Bonnie Vogt. She will present a program about how to create a water garden.

The horticulture exhibit will be one flowering stem from a bulb. The monthly design theme will be Royal Tea Time, create fascinator or a necklace-or both-from dried materials. Designer to wear the creation.

A light luncheon will be served; for nonmembers will have to pay a nominal cost. Everyone interested in gardening is invited to attend.

Table Tennis

East Stroudsburg University and West End Park & Open Space Commission are hosting a table tennis for kids event at Chestnuthill Park, 221 Route 715, Brodheadsville on April 12. The event is for ages 8-12. There are limited spots. This event has two one-hour sessions and each is limited to four children per session. Sessions begin at either 5:30 p.m. for 8- to 10-year-olds and 7 p.m. for 11- to 12-year-olds.

There is no prior knowledge of the game needed; beginners are welcome. Equipment will be provided.

Preregistration is required by calling 570-992-9733 or emailing bkozen@weposc.org. One must supply name, age and skill level of the child. The involved organizations look forward to seeing people there.

Session size and times may be altered depending on registrations.

Art exhibition

Eldred Township Community Center on Kunkletown Road is hosting the third annual art exhibition from 6 to 9 a.m. Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Works of local artists will be on exhibit and will be available for sale.

Applications due

Western Pocono Women’s Club scholarship applications for both the Jacqueline Sue Coleman Scholarship and the Memorial Scholarship are due by next Saturday in the PVHS Guidance Department.

That department also has the criteria for both.

Nashville Stars

St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown will welcome Nashville stars The O’Donnells for a country gospel concert beginning at 7 p.m. on April 25.

The group includes Darryl O’Donnell with vocals and guitar, Julie O’Donnell with vocals, Klinton O’Donnell on keyboard and vocals, the West End’s own Randy Cramer on fiddle, Ric Carhart on bass, and Eddie Long on steel guitar.

Volunteers needed

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is in urgent need for volunteers to complete all of the spring home preservation projects for deserving homeowners in Monroe County.

Start studying

Monroe County’s Annual Senior Spelling Bee is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. May 14 at Northampton Community College Monroe Campus, Keystone Room, Route 715, Tannersville.

Monroe County participants must be 55 years old or older.

The first-prize winner will receive $100, and the runner-up will receive $50.
