Monthly statistics
West End Volunteer Fire Company Chief Don Zipp shares that the volunteers responded to 67 calls for service in July. That, he says, is an increase of 34 percent over 2017 and puts the year-to-date total at 346.
The breakdown of these calls by type include: structure fire, 49; vehicle fire, 10; brush fire, 15; other fire, 11; automatic alarm, 77; auto accident, 65; Officer In Charge (OIC) calls 18; Hazmat/WMD, 2; public assist, 1; smoke investigation, 4; medical (includes medevac), 19; Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) 0; fire police, 7; utility, 49; CO alarm, 12, Tech rescue, 0: burn complaint, 6; and search, 1.
Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary will hold its monthly meeting at 6 p.m. today at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert.
WEPOSC meets
The West End Park and Open Space Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. today in Brodheadsville in the municipal building on Route 715.
Network meeting
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network’s board will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville.
Board of Education
The Pleasant Valley Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Administrative Building in Brodheadsville.
WELL Board
The West End Little League board of directors will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a closed meeting.
The following Thursday anyone may attend the League meeting, also at 7:30 p.m.
Both meetings are held at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building in Brodheadsville.
Lunch menu
Monroe County Seniors meeting at Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville, known as Chestnuthill Seniors, may choose to order ham with pineapple sauce for Friday’s lunch and stuffed cabbage for next Wednesday.
However, the site manager for the West End site, Dolores Casalasopro, must be called by 11 a.m. the day before at 570-242-6770 in order to make the meal reservation.
A special program, Lyme Disease Awareness, will be presented to the group at 10:30 a.m. next Wednesday.
A Glaucoma Risk Factors program will be presented there at 11 a.m. Aug. 29.

Habitat sale
Monroe County Habitat for Humanity will hold its warehouse sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Mountain Center off Route 611, in Tobyhanna.
All proceeds will benefit the administration of MCHFH’s programs including home preservation which allows homeowners affected by old age, low income or disability to make necessary repairs on their homes.
Mountain Bike Day
Mountain Bike Day will be held on Saturday at the West End Regional Park, 578 Evergreen Hollow Road in Brodheadsville. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon and there are more than 6 miles of trails ready to ride.
This year new single-track trails have been added. Plans for refreshments, and maybe some giveaways for those attending, are also in the works.
Also, Eric Peterson from Peterson’s Ski and Cycle is scheduled to give a free clinic, and answer biking questions.
To rent a bike from Peterson’s, call 570-646-9223. Call in advance as there are no plans at this time to have extra bikes at the park.
Trails range from beginner to expert, with the emphasis being on the beginner and intermediate trails.

Community meals
Several community meals are being offered at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church during the next week, beginning with breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. on Saturday.
A community lunch will be offered at 12:30 p.m. Aug. 15.
Community Sunday Suppers will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. this Sunday and Aug. 26.
Beginning immediately, West End Mission Meals will be offered on the second and fourth Thursday, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
That means the next one is Thursday and the second on Aug. 23.
Sub vets meet
The U.S. Submarine Veterans, Pocono Base, meets regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines.
This month’s meeting will be at 7 p.m. Aug. 15. Members will be at the West End Fair from Aug. 19-25.

Special visitor
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will welcome Danny Synoski this weekend. He will share his vocation story and tell congregants more about how they can support vocations through The Labouré Society, with which he is involved.
Mission speakers
St. Peter’s UMC in Saylorsburg will welcome two mission speakers from Delaware Water Gap at its 10 a.m. service on Sunday.
Nancy Gould and Sandy Rader will speak about Alice Visionary Foundation Project, an international Non-Governmental Organization registered with the Kenya government since September 2010 and also a nonprofit 501(c)(3) in the United States. It was founded with a mission of caring and supporting the vulnerable group who are infected and affected by HIV/AIDS epidemic.
They are board members of the project’s team and are preparing to return to Kenya in September.
They will also perform special music during St. Peter’s service.
The church offers a large parking facility, air-conditioned sanctuary, and fellowship hour with coffee and treats following worship.

Sharon Harfman will be in the pulpit at Salem UCC in Gilbert this Sunday. The worship service begins at 10 a.m.
Legion Riders
The American Legion Riders will have its August monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post 927, Route 209 and Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert.
The group is well-known for its charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children’s hospitals, schools, veterans homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships and enjoy riding.

Zion Lutheran’s Knit & Crochet group will ply their needles, beginning at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Newcomers are welcome.
Korean Vets meet
At 2 p.m. Tuesday, the Korean War vets will meet in the Legion Hall in Gilbert.
Touch of Home
Operation Touch of Home will meet for a regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post 927 on Route 209 in Gilbert.
PVEN needs
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network has needs both for its clothes closet and its food pantry.
Donate new back-to-school underwear in sizes that fit children going into kindergarten through high school and also new backpacks.
And for the food pantry the following items are being sought: family size soups, larger boxes of cereal, rice and pasta side dishes, pancake mix, pancake syrup and jellies, but no glass containers.
Donations are accepted from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday, Tuesday, and Friday at the current location at 279 Greenview Drive in Brodheadsville, near the Chestnuthill Diner.
