Waste permits

Polk Township’s new solid waste permits were announced as being available as of March 1. Those residents wishing to buy one are reminded to bring a vehicle registration along when purchasing the permit, which can be paid for by cash or check.

Art opening set

Elaine Madere’s Nature’s Beauty art show of watercolor and acrylic paintings inspired by the natural beauty of the Poconos will be on display at the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center in March. To round out the show, paintings which capture the landscapes and florals from her travels are also included.

The opening reception is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The exhibit runs from March 1-29.

McMichaels UMC will celebrate Holy Communion at its 9 a.m. service on Sunday.

Sugarbush events

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is sponsoring tours of its maple sugaring site in Marshall’s Creek in February and March. Tours cover the history of maple syrup from the Native Americans to the early settlers in this region. Attendees will learn how to tap a maple tree to obtain sap and watch as staff demonstrate how to cook the sap until it is sweet maple syrup.

A special day in the Sugarbush for Scouts is March 9. Programs can be scheduled between 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and are open to any level of Scouts and their families.

Preregistration for that event is required by March 6.

Blood drive

An American Red Cross blood drive is being held at the Monroe County Conservation District on Running Valley Road, Stroudsburg, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

StoryBook Theatre

“You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” will be presented at the Western Pocono Community Library by the StoryBook Theatre at noon Saturday.

There will only be one performance.

This is a free event with limited seating.

SAL to meet

The Sons of the American Legion is slated to hold its monthly meeting at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert.

The Legion’s Home Association will meet at 7:30 p.m. March 6.

Free bag lunch

Salem United Church of Christ, Gilbert, will be offering a free bag lunch to folks in the community the first Monday of each month beginning in March.

These free lunches may be picked up between noon and 1 p.m. Each lunch will consist of a sandwich, chips and water. They will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ross Supervisors

The board of supervisors for Ross Township meets at 7 p.m. Monday at the township’s municipal building at 250 Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg.

New hours

The Polk Township tax office begins its new office hours on Tuesday. The office will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays.

Ashes to go

Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville is continuing the tradition of offering Ashes To Go on Ash Wednesday, March 6. Pastor Melot will be in the church parking lot from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and again from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. offering ashes and prayer to all who come by in reminder that need, humility and healing shouldn’t be confined to a church building.

For those able to attend, there will be an Ash Wednesday worship service at 7:30 p.m. in the church that day.

Ashes at Mass

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will distribute ashes at its 12:10 and 7 p.m. Masses as well as at a 4 p.m. prayer service.

During the six successive Wednesdays of Lent, March 13 through April 19 the parish will sponsor a Life in the Spirit presentation in McCawley Hall.

The program will start each evening at 6 p.m. with dinner, and end at 8:30 p.m.

There is no cost for this six-week program.

Lenten study

Effort UMC will begin a Lenten study on Ash Wednesday in Wesley Hall, and it will be held each Wednesday during Lent with a time of fellowship being held from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m. with soup and salad.

The study will begin at 5:45 p.m. and go through 6:45 p.m. The study is “Perseverance: A Long Obedience in the Same Direction.” A donation for a book is requested. Lenten services will follow at 7 p.m. A sign-up sheet can be found on the welcome center at the church.

Bobby Rydell date

The Western Pocono Community Library has announced that Bobby Rydell will be at the Brodheadsville library from 5 to 7 p.m. March 7, a rescheduled appearance from the postponed Nov. 15 event.

All prior ticket sales will be honored. Limited tickets are still available.

Pizza sale

McMichaels UMC is holding a pizza sale. To order, call Stout at 570-992-6742 by March 7. Pickup is March 16 before noon.

Conservation scholarship

The Monroe County Conservation District and members of the Stanley Becker family have announced that applications are now being accepted for the 12th annual Stanley Becker Memorial Scholarship. This $500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior in Monroe County who is planning on attending college and majoring in an environmental field.

To apply, students may print an application or apply online at www.mcconservation.org. Deadline for applications is March 29.

Hoagie sale

Earth Day event

Monroe County Conservation District and Monroe Campus Northampton Community College in Tannersville have announced a 2019 Earth Day celebration.

It will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 27 when organizations, businesses and local agencies throughout Monroe County have organized a countywide event to celebrate the conservation successes of the past 20-plus years in Monroe County.

The day includes musical entertainment featuring The SteelCreek Duo and the Juggernut String Band. There will also be children’s activities, a Give and Take sponsored by Close the Loop, electronics recycling and tire amnesty sponsored by The Waste Management Authority as well as speakers and exhibits highlighting local environmental business, organizations and agencies.

New this year will be the Pocono Arts Council Earth Speaks Exhibit from 1 to 3 p.m. Admission is free.
