Lion honored

The Western Pocono Lions Club honored member Richard Zimmerman with the Lion of the Year Award at the club’s monthly meeting in June. He was presented that honor by club president, Lion Pat Buccieri.

Zimmerman has been a Lion since January 2004. In the past he was instrumental in planning the bowl-a-thons and he continues to volunteer and work at the West End Fair booth each August.

A continuous project for him is collecting and tallying the ShopRite sales slips, an important fundraiser for the club.

At the Christmas holidays, Rick takes his turn ringing the bell for the Salvation Army at ShopRite.

Inducted as 2018-19 club officers by Region Chair Lisa Leon at that meeting were: Pat Bussieri, president; Cindy Rodenbough, first vice president; Christopher Sweeney, second vice president; Jon Evens, secretary; Joanne Rush, treasurer; Linda Hinton, Lion Tamer; Jeff Hinton, Tail Twister; and Rick Zimmerman, register tapes.

The club‘s board members for this program year are: Eirene Charney, Marvin Aylsworth and Jon Evans, 1-year directors; and Charles Rush, 2-year director.

The club meets at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville the third Thursday of the month, with the board meeting at 6 p.m. and the social time beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Double event

The mission group at Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will have a double event tonight. First there will be a potluck supper with the church family and friends. An outdoor praise service follows at 7 p.m.

Phoebe Snow

The Heritage Center of the Western Pocono Community Library will feature the Story of Phoebe Snow with Kendrick Bisset at 6:30 p.m. today.

The Heritage Center is at 149 Bond Lane in Brodheadsville, the corner of Bond Lane and Routes 209 and 115.

WEPOSC meets

The West End Park & Open Space Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. today at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building in Brodheadsville.

Family Fun Night

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church will not have normal Wednesday evening services during July. However, there will be special Family Fun Night activities, including a waterslide at the church from 7 to 8:30 tonight. Parents must stay with their children.

PVEN board

PVEN’s board of directors will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.

Community meals

Several community meals are being served at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert this week.

The West End Mission meal will be served from 4:45 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday. A community breakfast will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday and CSSupper from 3 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Seniors menu

Chestnuthill Senior Center attendees are able to order a hot lunch of turkey hot brown sandwich for Friday and barbecue pork loin for next Wednesday.

Place the order by 11 a.m. the day before with the site manager at 570-242-6770.

There is a suggested donation for each meal.

A Shared Housing presentation by Ryan Lohman will be taking place next Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

Breakfast time

McMichaels UMC is having another all-you-can-eat-breakfast for donation only from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday.

Special guest

The Rev. Bitaju Mathew is a religious priest of the Order of the Most Holy Trinity and of the Captives and a member of the St. Michael of the Saints Vice-Province in India. He will be visiting Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert this weekend as part of Social Ministry Awareness and a mission appeal weekend this Saturday and Sunday.

Effort pantry

The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC, which serves the communities of Effort, Gilbert, Kunkletown, Kresgeville, Brodheadsville, Saylorsburg, Sciota and Albrightsville, will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. A valid driver’s license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is required.

Driver safety

An AARP driver safety course, Smart Driver is again being offered at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville this month.

The 8-hour version, for first-time attendees, takes place this Saturday and July 21. Class begins at 1 p.m.

The 4-hour version, for those who provide evidence of taking a class during the past 36 months, will be offered at 1 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Chestnuthill Park.

Communion offered

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will have one service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Holy Communion will be part of that service.

Guest preacher

Kaye Lentz is slated to fill the pulpit at Salem UCC in Gilbert this Sunday. Virginia Heimer is scheduled for July 22.

Basketball camp

A Lady Bears Basketball Camp will be held from 8:30 to 11 a.m., Monday through Thursday for those who registered previously. The camp is designed for the young players, grades 1 to 6, who are interested in learning the fundamentals basketball skills needed to improve their game.

Senior Expo

Sen. Mario Scavello, co-hosting with Rep. Rosemary Brown and Rep. Jack Rader, is presenting a Senior Expo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at the Pocono Mountain Swiftwater Elementary Center at 135 Academic Drive in Swiftwater.

There will be exhibitors from government agencies and senior citizen organizations. In addition, there will be free admission, door prizes, health screenings, educational seminars and refreshments.

Jam session

The Eldred Township Community Center in Kunkletown offers an acoustical jam session at noon every Monday in Room 248. Musicians with their own instruments and listeners are welcome to attend.

Self-care presentation

The Western Pocono Women’s Club will be having its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Effort United Methodist Church on Merwinsburg Road.

Jill Rehrig, PTA, CMT will share with the members how to take care of themselves. Rehrig is a certified massage therapist and physical therapy assistant who specializes in myofascial release treatments at Seventh Moon Wellness Spa as well as in private practice.

The group will finalize plans for the next Project Healing Waters event to be held on Aug. 1 at Indian Mountain Rod and Gun Club.

This project is a joint effort between members of the Indian Mountain Rod and Gun Club, Trout Unlimited and Western Pocono Women’s Club. It gives the veterans a relaxing day to fly fish and enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by the ladies and get a much deserved thank you for their service to our country.

Shawl ministry

The Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl Group will meet again at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Chestnut supers

The Chestnuthill Township board of supervisors will hold its second meeting of the month at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township municipal center on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

The Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 18.

Eldred Supervisors

The next meeting of the Eldred Township board of supervisors is scheduled for 7 p.m. July 18 at the municipal building in Kunkletown.

Sub vets meet

The Pocono Base of the U.S. Submarine Veterans will meet at 7 p.m. July 18 at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines. The group is a local chapter of the national organization U.S. Submarine Veterans, which has as its purpose to perpetuate the memory of shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country.
