ESL classes

The Western Pocono Community Library holds ESL classes each Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. Contact the library at 570-992-7934 for more information about classes.

Father’s Day event

The West End Park and Open Space Commission will host a free Father’s Day craft event from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Ross Township Park, 258 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg.

Kids will get to color a baseball cap for Dad. Participants are asked to register at 570-992-9733 or at bkozen@weposc.org.

SAL clambake

The Sons of the American Legion are holding the club’s third annual SAL clambake from 1 to 6 p.m. this Saturday at the Post 927 home in Gilbert.

Tickets are still available, with a reduced rate if bought in advance. Contact Jimmy Farmer for costs at 570-856-1780.

The meal includes three dozen clams. There will be lots of other foods to choose from, like chicken and hot dogs.

In addition, there will be a DJ, tricky tray and other activities as well.

Opening Day

Quiet Valley, Monroe County’s living historical farm, will open for the summer this Saturday.

Wine tasting benefit

On Saturday there will be a benefit event for the Leash-Free Dog Park at the West End Regional Park at the Blue Ridge Winery in Saylorsburg from 1 to 4 p.m.

It will include five tastings, a complimentary wineglass, a winery tour with winemaker Randy Detrick at 3 p.m. and basket raffles as well as the music of George Baier from 2 to 4 p.m. The singer/songwriter covers hits from the ’60s through today along with original tunes.

Collection continues

Effort UMC continues its collections for the UMCOR flood buckets. This Sunday the focus is on 50 clothes pins and clothes lines, either a 100-foot or two 50-foot lines.

The following week it is 24-roll heavy duty trash bags, 33- to 45-gallon size.

Strawberry festival

St. Matthews’s UCC in Kunkletown will host its annual Strawberry Festival and Car Show on Sunday, rain or shine.

Breakfast will be available from 8 to 10 a.m. The car show registration begins at 8 a.m. and runs until noon.

At 10 a.m. the Sunday worship will be held. The grill will reopen after the worship service for lunch and will be open until 5 p.m.

The car show is until 3 p.m., at which time trophies are awarded.

Music begins at 1 p.m. and continues until 5 p.m.

LAMA club meets

The Pocono Chapter of the Latin American Motorcycle Association will meet at 10 a.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post Home in Gilbert.

WPWC honorees

The Western Pocono Women’s Club will present its 2018 scholarships to two deserving graduating seniors from Pleasant Valley High School at the club’s meeting Monday.

Rachel Estrella of Effort will receive the $500 GFWC Western Pocono Women’s Club Memorial Scholarship. She is the daughter of Richard and Suzanne Estrella and will be attending Duke University.

Sara Coyle of Saylorsburg will receive the $500 GFWC Western Pocono Women’s Club Jacqueline Sue Coleman Scholarship. She is the daughter Edward and Michelle Coyle and will be attending Loyola University.

The duo have each demonstrated outstanding character and academic achievement.

Besides the scholarship awards, the club membership will begin gearing up for the annual, food stand at the annual West End Fair, from Aug. 19 to 25 in Gilbert, featuring roast beef sandwiches, strawberry shortcake and homemade soups.

The club meets at 7 p.m. on the third Monday of each month, March through December at the Effort United Methodist Church on Merwinsburg Road in Effort. It is open to all women 18 years and older.

Shawl ministry

The Prayer Shawl Ministry at Effort UMC will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

PTSD support

The PTSD support group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert. It is a Vets UnStoppable Peer-to-Peer PTSD Support Group. Non-Post members are welcome. It is sponsored by the VALOR Clinic Foundation.

Library event

Western Pocono Community Library’s children’s department begins its summer program: SummerQuest … LIBRARIES ROCK! on Tuesday.

To help the program, friends and neighbors can continue to collect empty toilet paper and paper towel cardboard tubes — please do not flatten; clean, empty canisters with plastic lids, all sizes (breadcrumbs, ice tea, flavored drink mix, oatmeal, chips, cookie tins, coffee, etc.); clean, large plastic soda bottle and milk carton caps.

Donors are asked bag and label contributions SummerQuest and bring them to Western Pocono Community Library at 131 Pilgrim Way, Brodheadsville.

Summer lunch

Western Pocono Community Library will once again host PVEN’s USDA Summer Lunch Program on Tuesdays and Wednesdays beginning Tuesday and ending on Aug. 22. For more information concerning the summer lunch program please call the library at 570-992-7934.

Chestnuthill meeting

The Chestnuthill Township board of supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Chestnuthill Township municipal building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Free dinner

Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville is again sponsoring a free community supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. June 20.

Flea market soon

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church’s annual flea market days and bake sale are approaching.

The event will be held 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 22; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 23; and 1 to 5 p.m. June 24.

The Gilbert church is selling spaces on the front lawn of the church along Route 209 for crafters, retail companies, and those who want to have their own yard sale. Applications are on the church website.

Middlecreek VBS

Middlecreek Church on Dorshimer Road in Kresgeville will hold its Vacation Bible School, for children ages 3 through 12, June 25 through June 29. The theme is: Shipwrecked, Rescued by Jesus.
