West End news for March 22, 2018
Donations accepted
The Effort Food pantry at Effort UMC is collecting the following for their family Easter baskets: canned pineapple slices, brown sugar, sweet potatoes (canned or fresh), white potatoes (5-pound bag fresh or canned), canned vegetables (corn, string beans, peas, carrots), canned fruit (peaches, pears, fruit cocktail, applesauce), cake mix and frosting, money for hams. Donations should be dropped off at the church by Friday.
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, is asking for plastic eggs and small individually wrapped candy for its annual Easter egg hunt Holy Saturday at 2 p.m. Donations can be brought to the office.
Mission meal
The West End mission meal will take place from 4:40 to 5:45 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert in McCawley Hall.
CJERP meets
The Chestnuthill-Jackson-Eldred-Ross-Polk Regional Comprehensive meeting is to take place at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill municipal building on Route 715.
Seniors menu
The Chestnuthill group of Monroe County Seniors will be able to order the hot meal of baked fish with parsley, scalloped potatoes, broccoli/tossed salad, wheat dinner roll and mandarin orange salad for Friday and apple ginger pork chop, mashed potatoes, peas and carrots/yellow squash soup, wheat dinner roll and oatmeal cookie for next Wednesday by calling the site manager at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.
A lighter fare menu is also available for ordering.
CWU meets
Church Women United of Monroe County invites everyone to the group’s business meeting at 1:30 p.m. Friday, at the Hughes Library, Ninth and Chipperfield Drive, Stroudsburg.
The meeting will take place meet in the Eisenmann Room on the second floor. There is an elevator. Anyone who wishes to donate paper goods for Pocono Area Transitional Housing is welcome to bring them to the meeting.

Movie night
The Southern Pocono Mission Connection will be holding a movie night at Neola UMC at 5:30 p.m. Friday. The movie is “The Shack.” All are welcome. Popcorn and other items available to purchase. The movie is free and open to the community.
The Southern Pocono Mission Connection includes several West End Methodist churches such as Effort UMC and St. Peter’s UMC in Saylorsburg.
Effort pantry
The food pantry at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information call the food pantry via Effort UMC at 570-629-1850.
Spring Drive
Operation Touch of Home will host its spring drive Saturday and Sunday.

Holy Week services
• Effort UMC will hold Palm Sunday services at 8:30 and 11 a.m. and a children’s Easter pageant will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday as well. On Maundy Thursday, March 29, a soup and breaking of bread in fellowship will take place at 6 p.m. in Wesley Hall and a service at 7 p.m. The Last Supper service on Good Friday will be at 7 p.m.
• McMichaels UMC will hold a Palm Sunday service at 9 a.m. Sunday.
• The Good Friday service will be at 1 p.m. March 30 at the Weatherly Centenary UMC at the waterfall.
• Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will have the celebration of Jesus’ procession in to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Masses will be offered at 5 p.m. Saturday, and at 8 and 11 a.m. Sunday.
• Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, will have Palm Sunday services at 9 and 11 a.m.
• Salem UCC, Gilbert, will have its Palm Sunday service, with Gene Hamilton as worship leader, at 10 a.m. There will be a blessing and distribution of palms and a dramatic reading of the Passion.
• St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, will hold a Palm Sunday service at 9 a.m.
• St. Peter’s UMC, on Route 115 in Saylorsburg, next to Dollar General, will have a Palm Sunday service at 10 a.m. with supervised ministerial intern Zimran Khan of Drew University bringing the message. Fellowship hour follows.
• Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, will have a worship service at 5 p.m. Saturday and then two services, at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., and Sunday school on Palm Sunday. At 2 p.m. the church will have an Easter egg hunt. It is open the community and will include games, face painting and pictures with the Easter Bunny as well.
Polk Supervisors
The Polk Township board of supervisors are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the township municipal building in Kresgeville.
Lioness guest
The Western Pocono Lioness Club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Community Room at Kinsley’s ShopRite.
A speaker from PVEN will be present. There will be refreshments.
Donations of change for the Purple Pig will benefit the PVEN.
WE Republicans
The West End Republican Club will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Lakeside Restaurant, 5154 S Hamilton Blvd., Saylorsburg.

Toddler Rhythm: an Interactive Musical Story Time is being held at 10 a.m. Wednesdays at the Western Pocono Community Library. Come for a short story followed by musical fun.
