Art awards
The Pleasant Valley High School Performing Arts awards will be presented at 6 p.m. today.
Auxiliary meets
The Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 927 will meet at 6 p.m. today at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert.
Ascension celebrated
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, will have an Ascension Mass at 5 p.m. Wednesday and at 12:10 and 7 p.m. Thursday. There will be no 8 a.m. Mass.
The office will be closed, but the West End Mission meal will be served from 4:40 to 5:45 p.m. and The Knights of Columbus will meet at 7 p.m.
WEPOSC meets
The West End Park and Open Space Commission will meet at 6:30 tonight at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building in Brodheadsville.
PVEN board
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network board of directors, representing a gathering of more than a dozen churches working together to help those in need, will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday.
Seniors menu
The Senior Center menu for the Chestnuthill group, meeting at Zion Lutheran church in the Fellowship Hall, is pepper steak with gravy for Friday. For next Wednesday it is roast turkey.
Those wishing to eat are reminded to call the site manager at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before.
Mom’s gift
Ross Township Park, on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg, will be the site for a Mother’s Day craft from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The activity will include creating a decorated pot with a growing plant in it to take home.

Effort pantry
The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon.
A valid driver’s license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is needed.
Ride benefit
On Saturday there will be a Jammin’ for Jeanne Poker Run that begins with registration at 11 a.m. at Keystone Harley Davidson in Lehighton and ends at Post 927 in Gilbert. Festivities at the Gilbert Legion Home begin at 1 p.m.

Refresher class
An AARP Driver Safety program, a four-hour refresher driving course, designed for qualified drivers 50 and older, is being given at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville.
Those taking the class must have evidence of taking the eight-hour course within the last 36 months.
There is a fee.

Special banquet
Salem UCC, Gilbert, will hold its third annual mother/daughter banquet Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m. It is a potluck dinner event. RSVPs are requested.
Trip planned
St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, is coordinating a bus trip to see “Jesus” at the Sight and Sound Theatre on June 19.
The trip includes the show, lunch at the Bird in Hand Buffet, bus and driver’s tip. Bus departs and returns to St. Peter’s UMC in Saylorsburg 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively. Call Mary or Nancy at 570-402-0996. Full payment is due Sunday.
All Sports Club
The Pleasant Valley All Sports Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school library.
UMW meets
United Methodist Women from Effort UMC will meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the church.
The program will be a presentation by a representative from Angels Closet. Devotions will be provided by Rosalie Juris. Hostesses for the evening will be Dee and Rosalie Juris.
Shawl ministry
Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl Ministry will be convening at the church to make prayer shawls from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday. Anyone who knits or crochets, or would like to learn, is welcome to join this ladies’ group.
Spelling bee
Monroe County’s Annual Senior Spelling Bee will take place Tuesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Northampton Community College Monroe Campus, Keystone Room, at 2411 Route 715, Tannersville.
It is open to Monroe County residents 55 years or older. Anyone interested should call the Monroe County Aging Office at 570-420-3735 or toll free 800-498-0330.
The first-prize winner will receive $100 and the runner-up will receive $50.
Tennis lessons
The West End Park & Open Space Commission will sponsor tennis lessons at the Pleasant Valley Middle School courts beginning Tuesday through Aug. 2. There are two six-week sessions for all ages.
Ages 11U will play Tuesdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; ages 12 to 16 will be Tuesdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; 14 through 18 years will play Thursdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; adults on Thursdays from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Munchkin Tennis, 6 to 7 years, will start on June 26 at 4:15 p.m.

PTSD support
The Valor Clinic Foundation is sponsoring a support gathering at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert of Vets UnStoppable Peer-To-Peer PTSD Support Group. The meeting is at 7 p.m.

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School PTO book fair will be ongoing Monday, Tuesday, and May 16, during school hours. Students will visit the book fair with their respective class.
Chestnuthill supervisors
The Chestnuthill Township Board of Supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the township municipal building in Brodheadsville.
PAC/PTO meets
The PAC/PTO for the Pleasant Valley Middle School will meet at 9:30 a.m. May 16.
Lioness board
The board of directors for the Western Pocono Lioness Club will meet at noon on May 16 at Cherry’s in Kresgeville. The regular club meeting will be held May 22, at Kinsley’s in Brodheadsville.
Sub Vets meet
The U. S. Submarine veterans, Pocono Base, meet regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines.
This month’s meeting will be at 7 p.m. May 16.

Fitness walk
The 22nd Annual Senior Fitness Walk in Monroe County will be taking place in downtown Stroudsburg on May 16.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. The walk begins at 10 a.m. This is a 1-mile walk through downtown Stroudsburg.
Entertainment will be provided as well as refreshments, festivities and door prizes that will follow the walk at the Pocono YMCA.
Early registration is strongly encouraged. The first 100 registrants will receive a free T-shirt.

Donation breakfast
McMichaels UMC is hosting its donation only breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday. There is no set cost. One gives what one wishes.
On Sunday, the church will celebrate Mother’s Day.
Flea market coming
Effort UMC’s United Methodist Women will be hosting its annual flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 19. A bake sale and lunch will be available.
Outdoor table spaces are still available. Those interested must bring their own table.

Bus trip
The West End Park and Open Space Commission is sponsoring a bus trip to see “Escape to Margaritaville,” a musical comedy, at the Marquis Theatre, New York City, on May 19.
The bus leaves Chestnuthill Park at 8 a.m. Show time is at 2 p.m. The bus leaves there at 5 p.m. and returns at 7 p.m.

Flea market
St. Peter’s UMC on Route 115 in Saylorsburg, next to Dollar General, is holding a flea market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 19, with a rain date of May 26.
In addition to tables featuring various items, the church kitchen will be offering home-baked treats, a hot lunch and beverages.
Anyone wishing to set up a table on the grassy area must call Skip at 570-992-6930 for costs and to verify space availability.
Veterans’ tribute
The Tribute to Veterans concert will kick off the free summer concert series at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Route 715 in Brodheadsville on May 20.
Chris Eckert and Leigh Pollari will perform from 6 to 8 p.m. Attendees are reminded to bring lawn chair, blanket and bug spray.
There will be free refreshments for all veterans and free ice cream for all attending the concerts.
It’s the community’s chance to show its thanks to those who served.
