Free dinner

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, is serving a free community dinner at 5 p.m. today.

STREAM Night

Pleasant Valley Elementary School is the site of the PVES/PVIS STREAM night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today.

Sub Veterans meet

The Pocono Base of the U.S. Submarine Veterans is meeting at 7 p.m. today at the Wilson Fischer American Legion, Post 413, 248 Old Route 940, Pocono Pines.

Eldred planners

The Eldred Township Planning Commission meets the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Eldred Township Municipal Building, 490 Kunkletown Road, Kunkletown. Changes to this schedule are made from time to time. Call the township to confirm the meeting.

School board

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Lions meeting

The Western Pocono Lions Club dinner meeting for November will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Cherry’s Restaurant in Kresgeville. The group will host a speaker from RSVP.

The board will meet at 6 p.m. and the members can begin to order off the menu at 6:30 pm.

WELL meeting

The West End Little League public meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville.

Chestnuthill Seniors

Tai Chi with Dolores is the activity this Friday at the Chestnuthill Senior Center meeting held in the Zion Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall in Brodheadsville. Next Wednesday it is arts and crafts.

The lunch menu, light version, is veggie and cheese quesadilla, black bean salad, diced pears, Jello, juice.

The regular menu includes Fish Thermidor, oven brown rice, lima beans, mixed vegetables and a mango.

Next Wednesday the light meal is taco salad, Corn O’Brien, pineapple tidbits, corn chips and juice.

The regular menu includes tomato & beef casserole, yellow squash, broccoli and sliced peaches.

Attendees are reminded to call in their respective choices by 11 a.m. the day before at 570-420-3735 or 570-242-6770.

Fall drive

Operation: Touch of Home is holding a fall drive for the troops on Saturday and Sunday at both the American Legion in Gilbert and ShopRite in Brodheadsville.

Volunteers may help at the Legion, beginning at 1 p.m., to help with setup on Friday.

Then, on both days, Dan Miller and Lisa Mankos from Mack Trucks will be at ShopRite with Jack Mack for the Pack the Mack campaign.

Volunteers are needed at both Kinsley’s ShopRite and at the American Legion Post 927 beginning at 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on both days.

Gracious Rose Pedals volunteers will be manning at ShopRite; any other volunteers for ShopRite are asked to contact Tammy Gower at 570-236-9695.

Meghan Nieves of Nazareth Barbell Health & Fitness championed a collection drive at NBHF and will be bringing those donations and also volunteering during one of the drive days.

When OTOH was in the Stroudsburg Veterans Day Parade earlier in November, a gentleman ran up to the group and thanked OTOH. He was one of the recipients of the group’s care packages, saying that those packages meant so much to him and to all the other military personnel with whom he shared the contents of the packages.

PV production

The Pleasant Valley High School Drama Club will present this year’s fall production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium.

It is performed by a cast of 21 student actors under the direction of Dan and Marcie Mulligan, with production assistance by Donna Morris.

Annual craft show

The Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville is holding its 39th annual craft show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The show features handmade arts or crafts and vendors who sell Avon, Pampered Chef, Tupperware, etc.

Blanket Sunday

McMichaels UMC is celebrating Blanket Sunday this Sunday at the 9:30 a.m. service. Monetary donations will be accepted to purchase blankets for UMICOR to be sent to areas in need.

Sunday supper

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert is hosting a community supper from 3 to 4 p.m. this Sunday.

Mah Jongg group

The Western Pocono Community Library has a Mah Jongg group that meets Mondays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Trip registration due

The West End Park and Open Space Commission is sponsoring a bus trip to Longwood Gardens on Dec. 8. View festive flower arrangements and the outdoor display of hundreds of trees and over a half million lights.

Lunch or dinner are of the travelers’ own choosing. The bus departs Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville, at noon; returns to Chestnuthill Park at 9:30 p.m. For costs and to register, due by Sunday, contact Bernie Kozen at 570-992-9733 or at bkozen@weposc.org.

Craft/vendor fair

The Blue Ridge Hook & Ladder Fire Company Auxiliary is having a craft/vendor fair and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. All are welcome and can have a picture taken with Santa from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Log Cabin Star quilt raffle drawing will take place and there will also be a bake sale. Lunch will be served. Residents and friends are invited to come and support this local fire company.

The firehouse is located on Route 115 across from Ye Olde Saylors Inn in Saylorsburg.

Diversity Task Force

The Pleasant Valley Diversity Task Force is set to meet at the District Office at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Knit & Crochet

Zion Lutheran’s Knit & Crochet will gather again at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church in Brodheadsville. Newcomers are welcome, whether experienced or not.

Thanksgiving Mass

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert will have a Thanksgiving Mass at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.

The church office, however, will be closed both Thursday and Friday.

Thanksgiving dinner

The West End Home Association is hosting an open free community Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 4 p.m. on Nov. 28, at the main hall in Gilbert.

Free Thanksgiving dinner

Effort UMC is holding its 15th community Thanksgiving dinner at 2 p.m. Nov. 28. Those who are alone or are unable to prepare their own meal are invited to share the joy of the holiday at the church.

Early dismissal

Pleasant Valley families are reminded that students will be having an early dismissal next Wednesday due to the Thanksgiving holiday recess.

Schools reopen on Dec. 3.

The West End Volunteer Fire Company’s newly elected officers will begin their new one-year term, on Jan. 1, 2020. Officers are as follows:

Blue Christmas

Salem UCC, Gilbert, will hold a Blue Christmas service at 2 p.m. Dec. 8 for those who are feeling blue and are depressed about the holidays.

If anyone has lost a family member, gone through a divorce, has a loved one who is suffering with an illness, has relationship problems, is living in an abusive relationship, lost a job, is having financial difficulties, come to the service is the church’s invitation.

The service is for comfort, peace and renewal. A time of fellowship and light refreshments will follow the service.

The church is located at 117 Corner Road, Gilbert.
