WPCL outreach
GFWC Western Pocono Women’s Club, along with local area Girl Scout troops, handcrafted close to 1,200 Christmas cards. These cards show support from the home front, wish the troops merry Christmas and are signed by both WPWC and the Girl Scouts. At Chestnuthill Township Day in September, members of the community had an opportunity to write personal messages on more than 100 cards. All the Christmas cards will be distributed to through the Red Cross, Tobyhanna Army Depot, and the VA in Wilkes-Barre, as well as to troops in other areas of the country and abroad.
Monthly during the fall, winter and early spring, members of the WPWC meet to design and sew quilts. So far this fall they have made 24 quilts. These quilts were then given to Monroe County Children and Youth and Celtic Hospice.
Quilts Made with Love by WPWC go to children as well as adults who feel the blessings and prayers of these handcrafted quilts.
Monthly, the club sends about $20,000 worth of coupons to a naval base in Okinawa, Japan, to help out the service personnel and their families. So far in 2017, WPWC has sent more than $145,000 worth of coupons to Japan. Judging by the thank-you notes received by the club, these coupons are greatly appreciated by the sailors and their families.
