Meeting tonight

The West End Park and Open Space Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m. today at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

PTO meets

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School PTO will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday.

School board

The board of directors for the Pleasant Valley School District will meet in public session at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Special assembly

The Pleasant Valley Middle School will host a Veterans Day assembly on Friday. The public is welcome.

Food drive ends

The Pleasant Valley School District’s food drive ends Friday.

On Monday the Toys for Tots collection begins. That collection benefits the Marine Corps League which distributes the toys locally.

Drama presentation

The Pleasant Valley Middle School will present “School for Nerds” at 7 p.m. Friday and at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday.

Park cleanup

A cleanup at the Regional Park in Chestnuthill Township is on the calendar for Friday, beginning at 9 a.m. For more information contact Bernie Kozen at 570-992-9733 or www.weposc.org.

Game night

St. Matthew’s UCC Tweens will host a game night at the church in Kunkletown from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday. All ages are welcome. Light refreshments will be served. The event is free and open to the public.

Home preservation

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is accepting applications for its Home Preservation Program designed to help homeowners affected by low income, age or disability make necessary repairs to their homes.

To qualify for home preservation, a single person must have an annual income of less than $38,600, and a family of two less than $44,100; income qualifications exist for larger families, as well. In addition, they must own their homes, have lived in Monroe County for two years, have homeowner’s insurance, and be current with mortgage payments and taxes.

Homeowners who meet these requirements to are encouraged to contact the Habitat office immediately at 570 216-4390 or execdirector@habitatmc.org for more information and an application advises Kelly Kemmerer, Executive Director of Monroe County Habitat for Humanity.

Breakfast served

McMichaels UMC is holding a donation-only-breakfast from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

On Sunday, at the 9 a.m. worship service, a guest speaker will present the message.

Park cleaning

A cleanup for the West End Regional Park is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. Community members are invited to participate in this effort to remove litter and trash from around the West End Regional Park. Gloves, vests and bags will be provided. The event provides community service projects for individuals, families and organizations. Call 570-992-9733 to register.

Recycling event

Eldred Township is hosting a recycling event for its residents Saturday. It runs to 2 p.m. Learn about recycling in the community and for a minimal cost bring tires from a car, light truck or trailer, with trailer tires for recycling costing the most.

Township residents can also bring metals/appliances, fluorescent tubes and twisty bulbs. There will be recycling information for all ages.

It is free to the township families.

Pantry open

The Effort food pantry will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Those seeking help must provide proof of West End residency.

Qualifying families may request help 12 times per lifetime.

Veterans Day

At 11 a.m. Saturday, American Legion Post 927 on Fairgrounds Road in Gilbert will hold a special ceremony to honor all veterans’ services. The ceremony will include posting of the colors and a welcome by the commander followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

The chaplain, the Rev. James Mills, will offer the invocation after the Auxiliary leads the national anthem.

The commander will present Resolution 288 followed by speakers state Rep. Jack Rader and the Honorable Colleen Mancuso.

The auxiliary chaplain will offer a prayer and Larry Lutz, a Lutheran minister and a veteran, will speak.

Alissa Lutz will sing “God Bless America,” followed by Don Wild Eagle, a Native American and a veteran, who will also speak.

The commander will address the attendees and chaplain Larry Lutz will offer the benediction. Light refreshments will be served.

The post is now accepting unwrapped toys for the annual USMC Reserve’s Toys for Tots. Donations of the same can be dropped off at the Gilbert post.

Eldred veterans

The Eldred Township Veterans Commission is hosting a Veterans Day Memorial Service at 11 a.m. at the Eldred Township Veterans Memorial at 490 Kunkletown Road in Kunkletown.

Painting party

West End Park & Open Space Commission is hosting a merry Christmas painting party from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday for those who registered previously. That party is at the Chestnuthill Park Building in Brodheadsville.

Special service

Salem UCC, Gilbert, will have a special service at 10 a.m. Sunday. Two Eagle Scout service projects will be dedicated and a new statue, honoring all veterans, will also be dedicated.

Members of Valor, Scouts, and all veterans from the church will be included.

A social hour will follow.

Veterans parade

The Monroe County Veteran’s Day parade will be held in Stroudsburg, beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, starting at the Stroudsburg High School.

Operation: Touch of Home will again be participating in the Stroudsburg Veterans Day Parade also.

Anyone wanting to walk with OTOH in the parade should be at the Gilbert American Legion Post 927 by 10:30 a.m., as that is when the group is leaving. Those having a white OTOH shirt or other OTOH shirt are asked to wear it, as that will be the uniform of the day.

Orders due

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is selling homemade filling. Orders are due on Sunday. Pickup is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 17. Payment is to be made then.

Safe Sanctuary

Effort UMC will hold a Safe Sanctuary Training refresher time for its volunteers at 1:15 p.m. Saturday.
