West End news for Oct. 11
Fire Prevention
West End Fire Company, partnering with Polk Township Volunteer Fire Co. and Albrightsville Fire Co. are presenting a fire safety program at Pleasant Valley Elementary today.
A short presentation on fire safety will be made and then the classes will go outside to tour the trucks and have the ability to go through a simulated burn building.
Meeting tonight
The West End Park and Open Space Commission will meet beginning at 6:30 tonight at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building in Brodheadsville.
PVEN board
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network board of directors will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville.
Blood drives
There will be an American Red Cross blood drive at the Monroe County Conservation Center on Running Valley Road from 1 to 6 p.m. Thursday.
On Friday, Cornerstone Community Church in Kresgeville will hold one, also from 1 to 6 p.m. The church is on Polk Township Road in Kresgeville.
Mission meal
The West End Mission Meal for those in need will again be served at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, from 4:40 to 5:45 p.m. Thursday. A breakfast will be served Saturday and a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 18.
Knights meet
The Knights of Columbus at Our Lady Queen of Peace will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the hall.
Old-Tyme meets
The Pocono Old-Tyme Farm Equipment Association meets the second Thursday of each month at the West End Fairgrounds in the New Museum Building meeting room at 7:30 p.m.
Newcomers are welcome.
School board
The Pleasant Valley School District board of directors will meet at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Administrative Building in Brodheadsville.
Bear walk
The PVE PTO Bear Walk will take place Friday. In the event of rain it will happen Saturday.
Bingo night
The West End Park and Open Space Commission will a host bingo night Friday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. at the Chestnuthill Township Park on Route 715 in Brodheadsville. It will include specials, pull tabs, door prizes and refreshments.
Volunteers needed
On Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church in Brodheadsville will host church work day. Volunteers who want to help clean up and beautify the church property and building, can call the church office at 570-992-6799. All ages are welcome, however no child care is provided.
Spirit Week
Pleasant Valley will celebrate Spirit Week all week long, beginning Monday.
Effort pantry
The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. A valid driver’s license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is required of those coming for help. That help is limited to a 12-week duration per family.
Harvest Festival
Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville will host a Harvest Festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Faith talk
Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will have its usual services as well as Sunday school and confirmation classes. The 8:15 a.m. service includes Holy Communion as does the 10:30 a.m. service, but the latter also includes a faith talk.
AARP class
The Chestnuthill Park in Brodheadsville will again be hosting a four-hour AARP Driver Safety refresher class. The class, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, is open only to those who provide evidence of having taken the class during the previous 36 months. There is a fee and one must bring one’s driver’s license. Hoagie sale
St. Matthew UCC, Kunkletown, is accepting orders for hoagies. Orders are due by Sunday morning. Orders need to be picked up Oct. 25.

Children’s Sabbath
Salem UCC in Gilbert will celebrate Children’s Sabbath at its 10 a.m. service Sunday.
The next week is a wear your house coat or bath robe to church celebration, after a breakfast served by the Boy Scouts. It will be served for a cost from 8:30 to 10 a.m.
Prayer Shawl group
The Effort Prayer Shawl Ministry will meet Tuesday, beginning at 10 a.m.
Our Lady Queen of Peace church’s group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon in the Teen Room on Saturday.
Dinner invitation
The GFWC Western Pocono Women’s Club invites interested women to a buffet dinner at 6 p.m. Monday at the Effort United Methodist Church. The dinner will be followed by a meeting at 7 p.m. Find out what the Western Pocono Women’s Club’s purpose is and the many service opportunities in the West End and around Monroe County.
Sister club, the Pocono Mountain Women’s Club, is invited to be their guests for the evening.
Annette Atkinson, president of the Monroe County Women’s Commission, will be the guest speaker. The commission is an advisory group to the Monroe County Commissioners. It seeks to identify the concerns and needs of Monroe County women and girls and provide opportunities to empower women and girls to reach their highest potential.

Chestnuthill meeting
The Chestnuthill Township board of supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the township municipal building in Brodheadsville.
Eldred Historical
The Eldred Township Historical Society is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the municipal building in Kunkletown.
Venue change
The Western Pocono Lions Club meeting on Oct. 18, will take place at a new venue, Kinsley’s ShopRite in Brodheadsville.
The board will meet at 6 p.m. sharp in the second floor meeting room. The members are being asked to be there so attendees can eat promptly at 6:30 p.m. There will be a nominal fee to cover the meal platter. At the meeting, future menus will be discussed. This will be a test run to see how everyone feels about the change.
Members are asked to bring a nonperishable food item to the meeting to be given to the PVEN food pantry, or simply Feed the Purple Pig at the dinner meeting.
