Deadline today

The Western Pocono Community Library is having a wreath-making event next week Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m. One must register by the end of today. For costs and to register, call the library at 570-992-7934.

Blood drive now

Cornerstone Community Church on Polk Township Road in Kresgeville is holding a blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. today. Both blood and Power Red are being accepted.

Mission meal

West End Mission will host another free community meal from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert.

Five township group

The Chestnuthill-Jackson-Eldred-Ross-Polk comprehensive meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township municipal complex.

PVEN toy sign-up

There are two more days families in need can sign up for the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network’s annual holiday toy distribution. They are Thursday and Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.

School board meets

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Directors is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the district office in Brodheadsville.

Open enrollment

The Chestnuthill Senior Center, 1919 Route 209, Brodheadsville, at the Zion Lutheran Church complex, is one of three Monroe County sites where Open Enrollment for Medicare appointments, though limited in number, can be made, courtesy of the Monroe County Area Agency on Aging.

Chestnuthill Seniors

On Friday, the Chestnuthill Seniors meeting at Zion Lutheran in the Fellowship Hall will again be able to do Tai-Chi with Dolores beginning at 10:30 a.m. Lunch gives the choice of the regular menu or the light menu. The regular menu is slated to be 10-grain pollock, stewed tomatoes, mixed vegetables and pineapple tidbits. The light menu is vegetable pasta salad, spinach side salad, mango and whole wheat crackers.

Next Wednesday’s activity is karaoke with Don Bell.

The menu for the regular meal is chicken tenders, broccoli, beets, orange and whole grain bread.

The light menu calls for chicken breast sandwich, low salt chips, sliced peaches, juice, whole wheat bun.

Meal choices must be called in by 11 a.m. the day before to either 570-420-3735 or 570-242-6770.

Project Owlnet

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center’s Project Owlnet Saw-whet Owl Banding Program with Pocono Avian Research Center continues to host the fifth season of Project Owlnet.

Kettle Creek will be open to the public this Friday and on Nov. 1 from 8 to 10 p.m. (Donations are welcome).

Participants will learn more about the Northern Saw-whet Owl, Project Owlnet, and have a unique opportunity to see one of the most secretive birds in the eastern U.S.

Preregistration is suggested.

Trivia Night

American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert is holding Trivia night Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and lasting until midnight.

Chili tasting

Post 927 in Gilbert is holding its second annual Great Chili Cook Off this Friday, and the tasting is open to the community, though there is a fee for participating in the tasting.

Those who were registered to be part of the cooking competition are reminded to be at the Post by 1:30 p.m., as tasting by the public begins at 2 p.m.

Spooky Days

Quiet Valley, Monroe County’s living historical farm between Snydersville and Stroudsburg, will hold Spooky Days on the farm Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Monroe County Conservation District’s Environmental Education Center is having its truckload wild bird seed sale with extras available on Saturday. The sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fall festival

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church in Brodheadsville is having its fall festival from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Beef dinner

St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, is having its roast beef dinner, which features both family style and takeout meals, on Saturday.

Serving mealtime is from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Takeouts will be available from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

Care packages

Effort UMC is collecting items such as popcorn, snacks, energy bars, puddings for its college students to send to them in time for the exams.

The church’s food pantry is accepting donations of canned yams, turkeys, turkey gravy, stuffing mix, canned vegetables, potatoes, pie filling, in order to help those people coming to the pantry for holiday help.

Anyone with questions can call the pantry by way of the church office at 570-629-1890, ext. 109. The pantry will be open for distribution from 10 a.m. to noon this Saturday.

Reformation Sunday

Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, will celebrate Reformation Sunday this Sunday.

Celebration Sunday

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will begin its Sunday morning with a praise service at 8:15 a.m. Confirmation class is at 9 a.m., and the 10:30 a.m. service is a praise service with a talk on gentleness and Sunday school.

At 11:40 a.m. the church family will have a celebration luncheon.

Special meeting

Chestnuthill Township Supervisors will meet for a special session at 7:30 a.m. Monday.

Church conference

The church charge conference for three area Methodist churches, Effort, McMichaels and Neola, will be held at Effort at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Polk Supervisors

The Board of Supervisors for Polk Township is slated to meet at 7 p.m. Monday at the township municipal building in Kresgeville.

Animal League meets

The monthly meeting of the Monroe Animal League will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, at the Eastern Monroe County Library, Route 611/North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg.

MAL promotes spay/neuter and humane education as a way to control pet overpopulation, and thus relieves cruelty and suffering among animals. Members believe this to be the best way to achieve a future with no more homeless animals.

All Monroe County animal lovers are encouraged to attend and to bring a friend as the larger the membership, the easier for members to accomplish the group’s mission.

Sunrise walk

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center is holding a Sunrise Photo Walk at the Tannersville Bog, at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 30. It will be a unique opportunity to experience the bog in a whole new light.

Walk attendees are encouraged to bring a camera to capture the beautiful sunrise at the Tannersville Bog and wear appropriate footwear. For costs, and to make the required preregistration, call the Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center at 570-629-3061.

Trick or Treat

Eldred Township Trick or Treat will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.

Polk Township has set its Trick or Treat Night for 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31. Residents who would like to participate are asked to turn on their porch light.

Ross Township is holding its Trick or Treat from 5 to 7 p.m. also.

Trunk or Treat

Chestnuthill Township will hold its Trunk or Treat event from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31, at the municipal complex on Route 715.

It will include a costume contest for those ages 12 and under, as well as fun activities, including trick or treat.

The West End Fire Company will host its Trunk or Treat event from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31, as well.

Need a home

Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is currently accepting applications for its homeownership program. Habitat gives a hand up to struggling renters so that they may become partner families and homeowners. Partner families are required to contribute sweat equity hours (volunteering) to MCHFH’s projects and to pay a low-interest 30-year mortgage on the home.

To qualify to apply, a family must meet certain requirements including, but not limited to: has lived in Monroe County at least one year; has not been a homeowner in the past; must have credit score of 640; must fall within stated income guidelines. Examples are, a family of two must earn annually between $33,040-$47,060 or a family of four can earn between $41,040-$57,060; must be willing to provide sweat equity.

Those who fall within these guidelines and would like to apply for MCHFH’s homeownership program, can call the MCHFH office at 570- 216-4390 or email execdirector@habitatmc.org.

Hunt-trap education

Pennsylvania Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education course for this fall, sponsored by the Indian Mountain Rod & Gun Club in Kresgeville, will be held Nov. 2, at the club’s home on Route 534.

The course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Doors open at 8 a.m.

Preregistration required for this class and must be done at http://www.pgc.state.pa.us. Minimum registration age is 11.

The one-day course is required by Pennsylvania law for all first-time hunters and entails online study before attendance. The facility offers limited seating. Lunches will be available at the course for purchase. Submit questions to the instructor Bill Marks, at bmarks191@gmail.com.

CWU event

Church Women United of Monroe County is holding its World Community Day Resolve to Love event at 2 p.m. Nov. 2, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 9 N. Ninth St. in Stroudsburg. Attendees are asked to use the back door. It is not a covered dish event.

A collection will be received to be sent to the National Church Women United office to support the work of the national movement.

Collected pennies for the Fellowship of the Least Coin will be accepted. These are used to help women and children throughout the world through grants from Church Women United.

Pork & sauerkraut

Effort UMC will hold an all-you-can-eat pork and sauerkraut dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. Nov. 2. Costs are the same as previously for adults and children ages 4 to 12, while children 3 and under get a free meal.

Fall bazaar

St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is holding its annual fall bazaar, bake sale and tricky tray from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 2.

It will include a rummage sale, refreshments and more.
