Fantastic fellowship
The Western Pocono Women’s Club had 70 women at its annual new member/covered dish dinner last week. There were 17 guests from the club’s sister club, Pocono Mountain Women’s Club, and the local group had the honor of hosting the president of the Pennsylvania State Federation of Women’s Clubs.
Six new members joined the Western Pocono Women’s Club that evening.
Absentee ballot
Friday is the last day for the County Board of Elections to receive absentee ballots.
Coin collection ends
The Pleasant Valley Middle School student council’s sponsored Be the Change, a community outreach project which is a homeroom coin collection competition benefit, ends Thursday. Students and families are reminded to bring in coins.
The beneficiaries are three local food pantries that serve the community: West End Food Pantry, PVEN and the United Methodist Food Pantry at Effort UMC.
Halloween events
Eldred Township Trick or Treat will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Polk Township has set its Trick or Treat Night for 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Residents who would like to participate are asked to turn on their porch light.
Ross Township is holding its Trick or Treat from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
Chestnuthill Township will hold its Trunk or Treat event from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the municipal complex on Route 715.
It will include a costume contest for those ages 12 and under, as well as fun activities, including trunk or treat.
Chestnuthill Seniors
As the Chestnuthill Seniors meet at the center at Zion Lutheran on the first day of the month. This Friday, the activity is Tai-Chi with Dolores. Next Wednesday it is current events.
The menu for Friday for the light meal is garden salad, cottage cheese, carrot sticks, an apple and whole wheat roll.
The regular meal is veggie egg bake, roasted diced potatoes, mixed vegetables, apple sauce and whole wheat roll.
Next Wednesday’s light meal is salami and mozzarella, cauliflower salad, diced pears, pudding and whole grain bread.
The regular meal is pork with apple gravy, butternut squash, sauerkraut, pineapple tidbits, whole wheat bread.

Blood drive
An American Red Cross blood drive is being held at American Legion Post 927 from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Both whole blood and Power Red are being accepted.
Miller-Keystone will hold its first drive of the month, at Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville on Nov. 6.
Special presentation
Caitlin Alifirenka, co-author of the YA dual memoir, “I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives,” will visit Pleasant Valley High School on Friday. She will share the inspiring story of an all-American girl and a boy from Zimbabwe, and the letter that changed both of their lives forever.
Doors open at 5 p.m., presentation starts at 5:30 p.m.
Hunt-trap education
Pennsylvania Game Commission Hunter-Trapper Education course for this fall, sponsored by the Indian Mountain Rod & Gun Club in Kresgeville, will be held Saturday at the club’s home on Route 534.
The course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Doors open at 8 a.m.
Preregistration required and must be done at http://www.pgc.state.pa.us. Minimum registration age is 11.
The one-day course is required by Pennsylvania law for all first time hunters and entails online study prior to attendance. The facility offers limited seating. Lunches will be available at the course for purchase. Submit questions to the instructor, Bill Marks, at bmarks191@gmail.com.
Fall bazaar
St. Matthew’s UCC, Kunkletown, is holding its annual fall bazaar, bake sale and tricky tray from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
It will include a rummage sale, refreshments and more.
Park cleanup
A park cleanup is being held at the West End Regional Park on Evergreen Hollow Road from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
Gloves, vests and bags will be provided. It is a community service project for individuals, families and organizations.

Holiday workshop
Friends of Quiet Valley is holding its holiday workshop from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Sessions include: Basics of bread baking and making a pie crust, felted gnome, Amish toothbrush mat, wood carved dog and painted gourd ornaments.

Photo display opening
Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center art opening of Nancy Hopping’s Living with Wildlife is set for Saturday with a reception from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The artist captures the beauty of Pocono wildlife and what she sees and feels in her award-winning photography.
This exhibit will run Nov. 2 through Dec. 2.

World Community Day
Church Women United of Monroe County is holding its World Community Day Resolve to Love event at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 9 N. Ninth St. in Stroudsburg. Attendees are asked to use the back door. It is not a covered dish event.
A collection will be received to be sent to the National Church Women United office to support the work of the national movement.
Collected pennies for the Fellowship of the Least Coin will be accepted. These are used to help women and children throughout the world through grants from Church Women United.
Pork & Sauerkraut
Effort UMC will hold an all-you-can-eat pork and sauerkraut dinner from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday. Costs are the same as previously for adults and children ages 4 to 12, while children 3 and under get a free meal.
Monroe parade
Operation: Touch of Home will be participating in the 2019 Stroudsburg Veterans Day Parade on Sunday.
Any volunteers are interested in walking with and helping to represent OTOH are asked to contact the group either at 570-629-9695 or Bentzoni at 570-350-2981.
Those going will meet at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert at 10 a.m. to car pool to Stroudsburg High School or drive there.
If driving, go directly to Dansbury Park, park there and take the shuttle/bus to the school. The parade route is from the high school to Dansbury Park. The parade is to kick off at 1 p.m., so those participating should be there early for line up.
SAL meeting
The Sons of the American Legion is meeting at 11 a.m. Sunday at Post 927 in Gilbert.
Purse bingo
The Western Pocono Memorial Park Committee is hosting a Coach, Kate Spade & Vera Bradley Bingo on Sunday at the West End Fire Company on Route 715 in Brodheadsville. Doors open at noon and bingo starts at 1 p.m.
Refreshments such as turkey barbecue, hot dogs, pulled pork, pierogies, homemade soup, baked goods and drinks will be available. For tickets or information, call 610-381-2076 or 570-992-2629. All proceeds to benefit the Western Pocono Memorial Park in Kunkletown on Molasses Valley Road.
The next phase of improvements includes upgrading the playground, continuing construction of walking trail and continued regular maintenance of the grounds, building and equipment.
Ross Supervisors
The Ross Township Board of Supervisors is slated to meet at 7 p.m. the first Monday of the month at the Ross Township building in Saylorsburg.
Canceled meeting
The Chestnuthill Township supervisors will not meet this Tuesday. The meeting is canceled and the township office is closed due to Election Day.
All Souls Mass
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, will hold a Mass of Remembrance at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
There will be a special acknowledgment of those who had their funerals here at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church from Nov. 1, 2018, through Nov. 1, 2019.
Eldred Supervisors
Eldred Township Supervisors are slated to meet at 7 p.m. Nov. 6. To verify, check the website or call 610-381-4252.
Volunteer appreciation
Monroe County Habitat for Humanity is hosting its 2019 Volunteer Appreciation Event on Nov. 7 at Shawnee Inn at 6 p.m. Volunteers are invited to enjoy dinner and live entertainment as a gift to them. They are asked RSVP with development@habitatmc.org or call the office directly at 570-216-4390 if planning to attend this exciting event.

Donations accepted
The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be accepting donations to use in the food pantry distribution for Thanksgiving. Items such as canned yams, Turkeys, turkey gravy, stuffing mix, canned vegetables, potatoes, pie filling, etc. are needed.
Donations should be brought to the Effort UMC pantry by Nov. 9.

Veterans Day
A Veterans Day ceremony will be held at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert at 11 a.m. Nov. 11.
There will be guest speakers, including state Sen. Mario Scavello, state Rep. Jack Rader and Staff Sgt. Daniel Hauss.
American Legion Post Commander Danny Insalata will do the POW-MIA presentation. Full military honors will be presented by the Post 927 Honor Guard. There will also be the playing of taps.
A light lunch follows the ceremony.
Thanksgiving service
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network will host its annual Thanksgiving service at 3 p.m. Nov. 10 at Salem UCC in Gilbert
Dorothy Hepner, from Salem UCC, is extending a special invitation to all PVEN member churches to have singers join a combined choir and to have members come and give thanks.
Offerings and food donations will be collected for the PVEN Food Pantry.
Choir practice for the combined choir will be at 2 p.m. on the day of the service at the church.
Those planning to sing as part of the choir are asked to call Dorothy at 570-688-7366.
All are welcome to join the choir or to join the worship service.
Craft show coming
The Western Pocono Community Library 39th annual craft show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 in the library’s lower level, in the walking track area. Crafters are wanted.
The show is for handmade arts and crafts and vendors of that sell items for home and personal use.

PV production
The Pleasant Valley High School Drama Club has announced this year’s fall production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 and 23 and at 2 p.m. Nov. 24 in the high school auditorium. This classic piece of American literature is performed by a cast of 21 enthusiastic student actors, under the direction of Dan and Marcie Mulligan with production assistance by Donna Morris.
