Important correction

The 20th Annual Eldred Township Historical Society gift card/cash bingo will take place this Sunday at St. Matthew’s UCC church in Kunkletown. Doors open at noon. Bingo begins at 1 p.m.

The next meeting of the Eldred Township Historical Society is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Eldred Township Municipal Building, not as previously stated.

WEPOSC meeting

The West End Park & Open Space Committee is slated to meet at 6:30 tonight at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building on Route 715.

Legion Auxiliary

Tonight at 7 is the monthly meeting of the Legion Auxiliary for and at Gilbert Post 927. Contact Pat Froncek at 570-242-0497 for more information.

Community meals

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Gilbert, is hosting two community meals this week. The first is the West End Mission meal from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday; the second is the Sunday supper from 3 to 4 p.m.

PVEN meeting

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network Board of Directors is slated to meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church in Brodheadsville.

Hoagies ahead

Pocono Old-Tyme Farm Equipment Association is having a hoagie sale, with the order due date Thursday. Hoagies will be made Oct. 16 and delivery is Oct. 17.

PVI PTO

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate PTO is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Board of Education

The Pleasant Valley Board of Education is on the calendar for meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday.

WELL meeting

The West End Little League Board of Directors will meet in closed session at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville.

The League’s open meeting follows a week later at the same location at 7:30 p.m.

Bike night

Post 927 in Gilbert will be the site of a Bike Night Friday, beginning at 5 p.m.

All bikes are welcome.

Burgers, dogs, wings, sides, cash bar, 50/50, Best Bike contest and the Knobby Whistlers classic rock band are part of the evening that is open to all.

Chestnuthill Seniors

On the day’s menu in activity and for lunch for the Chestnuthill Seniors this Friday is Tai-Chi with Dolores at 10 a.m. and the light and regular menu of taco salad with chicken, black bean salad, an orange and yogurt for the former and Italian fish over orzo, Cali blend vegetables and beet and oranges for the latter.

Next Wednesday‘s activity is Current Events at 10 a.m. with the lunch choices being, light: dilled turkey salad, pea salad, fruit cocktail/rice pudding, and the regular being tomato & beef casserole, sliced carrots, broccoli, spiced pears and whole wheat bread.

Those attending are reminded to call in their respective meal choice by 11 a.m. the day before to 570-420-3735 or 570-242-6770.

There is a small fee for the lunches.

Effort pantry

Historic sites tour

The Ross Township Historical Society will hold its second annual historical sites tour on Saturday. It is a free event, a gift to the community and neighboring towns, says Kathryn Villoresi, founder and president of the historical society.

Everyone meets at the former Ross Township Municipal Building at 11 a.m. for instructions and a map. Participants will use their own cars.

Folks can go to all the spots or pick and choose. Those locations on the tour include: Ross Common Property, the Flyte School, cemeteries on Old Route 115, Bruno Apple Ridge Farm and Mount Eaton Church. There is no specific order. Each presenter will give a tour every half-hour starting at 11:30 a.m. with the last tour at 2 p.m.

Participants return to the township building by 3 p.m. for refreshments, the opportunity to look at the museum items, and to be entered in the door prize drawing, which is a Cracker Barrel gift card.

Cemetery walk

Norm Burger will lead a Kresgeville Cemetery walk at 2 p.m. Saturday. The cemetery is located on the southeast side of Route 209, about 100 yards from Pohopoco Creek. Parking is on Center Driveway. The GPS location is: 40.897000N 75.503161W.

Those attending folks can learn more about past residents, their lives and families and impact on the then-forming community.

Firm walking shoes are recommended as there are uneven spots. Cider and snacks will be provided.

A small donation is requested to help defray costs.

Harvest festival

Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is preparing for its annual Harvest Festival Saturday and Sunday. There is apple peeling, sausage patty and pie making, as well as everlastings happening late next week.

The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. There is an admission cost.

This year’s theme is: Farms — Center of the Community. There will be many activities including apple butter making, bake oven, candle making, and many other interesting activities or displays.

OTOH show

Operation: Touch of Home will again have its annual Military Appreciation Dinner/Comedy Show on Saturday at the Polk Township Fire Hall in Kresgeville. One must be 21 years or older to attend. Doors open at 4 p.m., dinner is at 5 p.m. and the comedy show begins at 7 p.m.

The event will include a baked goods auction and the group will also be collecting canned goods, toiletries and other nonperishable items at the event to include in the care packages to be sent to deployed troops in November.

Harvest Home

Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will be celebrating Harvest Home this Sunday. Worship services are at 8:15 and 10:30 a.m. The Confirmation class meets at 9 a.m. The later service is slated to include a baptism as well as Sunday school.

St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown is also celebrating Harvest Home this Sunday. Donations are split between the between PVEN and the food pantry in Kunkletown.

Fellowship breakfast

Effort UMC is holding a fellowship breakfast from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. this Sunday. A freewill offering is being graciously accepted, with proceeds going to the church’s Capital Improvement (building) fund.

Riders meeting

The Riders monthly meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Sunday at American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

Confirmation class

Effort UMC will begin its Confirmation class for youth this Sunday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Classes are for anyone currently in sixth grade and up. For registration and a copy of the class schedule, contact Pastor Robin.

Schools closed

Pleasant Valley School District schools are closed for the holiday for students on Monday. Teachers will be reporting for staff development.

UMW meeting

United Methodist Women of Effort UMC will meet at 7 p.m. Monday. Hostesses are Pat Mackes and Ruth Fkechsig. Mackes will also lead the devotions.

All Sports Club

The Pleasant Valley All Sports Club will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the high school library.

Shawl ministry

Effort UMC’s Prayer Shawl ministry will meet on Tuesday, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The group provides the handmade shawls to anyone in need.

Meeting canceled

The Chestnuthill Township Board of Supervisors slated for 7 p.m. Tuesday has been canceled.

Peer to Peer

A VALOR Peer to Peer meeting is scheduled for 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Post 927 in Gilbert. It is open to all Post and non-Post veterans and families.

Pleasant Valley‘s Diversity Task Force will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the District Office.

The Pleasant Valley Elementary School PTO will be meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville will host its next free community dinner from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16. Everyone is welcome.

Sub vets meet

The U.S. Submarine Veterans, Pocono Base, meet regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines. They are a local chapter of the national organization U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc.

The purpose of the organization is to perpetuate the memory of shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country. Submarine veterans from all eras are encouraged to join.

This month’s meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 16.

‘Aladdin’ auditions

The Western Pocono Community Library is scheduling audition appointments for its Storybook Theater’s “Aladdin.” Students in grade 7 to 12 are welcome.

Appointments will be held Oct. 17 and Oct. 24, beginning at 6 p.m.

Ordering deadline

Monroe County Conservation District’s Environmental Education Center has scheduled its truckload wild bird seed for sale on Oct. 26. Ordering deadline is Oct. 17.

Obtain a complete order form by calling the center at 570-629-3061, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. most Saturdays.

Prices are reduced for this truckload sale, but folks are reminded that bird seed is sold in the gift shop along with a wide variety of feeders and field guides year-round.

Middlecreek sale

Middlecreek Christian Church, 343 Dorshimer Road, Kresgeville, will hold its fall rummage and bake & soup sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 18 and Oct. 19. A bag sale will be held between noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Project owlnet

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center’s Project Owlnet Saw-whet Owl Banding Program with Pocono Avian Research Center will host the fifth season of Project Owlnet. Kettle Creek will be open to the public Oct. 18, 25, and Nov. 1 from 8 to 10 p.m. Donations are welcome.

Participants will learn more about the Northern Saw-whet Owl, Project Owlnet, and have a unique opportunity to see one of the most secretive birds in the eastern U.S.

Preregistration is suggested.

The West End Park and Open Space Commission is hosting the annual Pet (Costume) Parade at noon Oct. 19, at the Ross Township Park, 258 Anchorage Road, Saylorsburg.

Prizes will be given for the Scariest, Cutest, Most Original and Pet & Owner Look-a-Like.

Participants should dress up one’s favorite pet and come to have some fun.
