Post 927 meetings
The American Legion Post 927 Auxiliary will meet at 6 p.m. today at the Post home in Gilbert.

PVEN board
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network’s board of directors is slated to meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.
Mission meal
The West End Mission Meal will be served at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert.
School board
The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Administrative Center in the school complex in Brodheadsville.
Pocono Olde Tyme
Pocono Olde Tyme Farm Equipment Association will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the new museum building at the West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert. Newcomers are welcome.
WELL board
The West End Little League board of directors is slated to meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville.
Next Thursday is a League meeting open to all.
Fall cleanup
Ross Township is holding its fall cleanup from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the rear of the municipal building on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg.
Items being accepted include metal, tires, automobile batteries, mattresses and appliances, such as freezers and refrigerators, which must be empty, carpets, furniture, bikes and general trash. For costs and other information, view the township website or call 570-992-4990.
Lunch served
Monroe seniors, who meet at the Zion Lutheran site, can opt to have teriyaki cod on Friday for lunch and baked ham for next Wednesday. They must just call the site manager at 570-242-6770 by 11 a.m. the day before to place an order. There is a suggested donation for each meal.
Doors open at 9 a.m., and at 11:30 a.m. next Wednesday Bernadette Jones will speak on the ombudsman program.
Blood drive
The Kunkletown Firehouse is the site for an American Red Cross blood drive from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday. Both regular blood and Power Red donations will be accepted.
Need another time? Donate at the Miller-Keystone unit at the Western Pocono Community Library on Sept. 19, with the hours beginning at noon.
Walk-ins are welcome.
Grand opening
Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is hosting a grand opening ceremony of its new site on Route 209 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Slater’s craft
Mike Piersa, a Pleasant Valley graduate, is a historian at the National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem. He is also the coordinator of the Bangor Quarry Hoist Project, which is working on preserving a 118-year-old mining hoist built in Bangor, part of the slate industry
For more than a decade, he has directed efforts to save the hoist and preserve many other antique machines from local slate quarries.
This Saturday, there will be a hands-on demonstration of the slater’s craft at the museum at 11 a.m.

Worship change
As of last Sunday, the Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, went back to two services. Those services are at 9 and 11 a.m.
Classes resume
Effort UMC’s Sunday School/Body Building will begin this Sunday. Body Building is for children who will be age 3 on or before Sept. 1; Pre-teens is for children who will be age 9 on or before Sept. 1; and Teens is children who will be age 12 on or before Sept. 1. Classes are held during the 11 a.m. service.
Paw party
Pocono Pet Nanny and Friends will celebrate her 15th anniversary paw party from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, at Chestnuthill Township Park in Brodheadsville.
It is a pet-friendly (on leash) event and will include dog rescues, live music, vendors, refreshments, tricky trays and fun.

PVI book fair
The PTO book fair at the Pleasant Valley Intermediate School will run in school all week.
Phone line opens

Effort UMC’s prayer shawl ministry will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
Lioness meet
The Western Pocono Lioness Club will meet at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.
Mission project
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is having three mission events open to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Sept. 19. The first one will be at Chestnuthill Township hall; the second at the Sierra View Clubhouse on Allegheny Drive, and the final one at Polk Township Fire Hall in Kresgeville.
Each program begins at 7 p.m. The first one is about the Prodigal Son and will include a lesson and colored pencil drawing. A Gospel reading, a short lesson and a video and then QOP artist and parishioner Jean Perry will help visualize this parable in a hands-on colored pencil drawing. The event is limited to the first 50 people.

Tuesdays, at the Sierra View Clubhouse on Allegheny Drive, is about finding the truth in Halloween: Halloween, Prayer for the Dead and the Communion of Saints, and Wednesdays at the Polk Township fire hall is Hollywood vs. Faith.

Pleasant Valley School District’s Diversity Taskforce will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the District Office in Brodheadsville.

The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School’s fourth-grade open house and book fair will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Meeting canceled
The Chestnuthill Township board of supervisors meeting on Tuesday has been canceled. The next meeting of the township supervisors will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 2.
PVMS PTO
The Pleasant Valley Middle School PTO is slated to be held at 9:45 a.m. Sept. 19.
Men’s group
Effort UMC’s Men’s Group begins its new studies and activities at 9 a.m. Saturday. The group meets the third Saturday of each month in the church’s former day-care kitchen area.

Sub vets meet
The U.S. Submarine Veterans, Pocono Base, meets regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines. They are a local chapter of the national organization U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. The purpose of the organization is to perpetuate the memory of shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country. Submarine veterans from all eras are encouraged to join.

The American Legion Riders meeting at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert are sponsoring a Bike Night at the Legion from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 20.

Breakfast speaker
The Pocono Mountains Hunger Coalition will be hosting Nancy Walters, founder of the Easton Hunger Coalition at its Hunger Action Month breakfast at 9 a.m. Sept. 21. It is being held at NCC-Monroe Campus in Room 202, Keystone Hall.

Flea market ahead
St. Peter’s UMC, Saylorsburg, will hold its annual outdoor flea market on Sept. 22. The church is located on Route 115 next to Dollar General.
Vendor tables are still available by calling 570-992-6930 and asking for Skip or Marie. The church kitchen will be serving lunch, beverages and home-baked treats. Flea market hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is Sept. 29.
StrongWomen
To sign up for the Monroe County Eldred/Kunkletown event, which is listed as a StrongWomen/Growing Stronger 6-Week Challenge, go to https://extension.psu.edu/strongwomen-growing-stronger-challenge.
The class, for women 45 and older, will begin in October, with the classes at the Eldred Township Community Center from 6 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the Community Center. There is a fee for this program, which will instruct women on nutrition and fitness as they age.
Rydell visit changed
The Western Pocono Community Library’s welcome of Bobby Rydell has been changed from Nov. 8 to Nov. 15.
Not only is he a teen idol, movie star and TV star, but he is the author of “Teen Idol on the Rocks,” a humorous, tragic, inspiring nonfiction book.
Tickets for the event must now be purchased by Nov. 9.
The cost of the ticket includes a copy of the book.
