West End fire calls
Chief Don Zipp reports that the West End Fire Company volunteers were called out 35 calls in the month of August.
He explains that this is 5 percent less than responded to in August 2017. Year-to-date, the tally is responding to 381 calls for service. That does not include all the hours the volunteers spent at the West End Fair.
They staff a rescue/engine and brush truck for the operating hours of the fair and also provide fire and rescue protection during the events at night on top of the rescue/engine and brush truck.
Neighboring companies Support West End Fire Company for the events at night. This year Polk, Jackson, Pocono Township, Tunkhannock Township and Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder all provided support for events Tuesday through Thursday nights.
PVE Open House
The Pleasant Valley Elementary School will hold its open house and book fair from 6 to 8 tonight for kindergarten and first grade and on Thursday for second and third grades.
Healing service
A healing prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert.
Eldred supervisors
Pam Witmer of UGI will be presenting an update on the PennEast pipeline at the Eldred Township board of supervisors meeting at 7 tonight at the Municipal Building.
Home Association
The West End Home Association will meet at 7:30 tonight at the American Legion Post home in Gilbert.
The Legion will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Yard sale
Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville is holding its precious junk sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Community meals
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church has a community breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday and a community Sunday supper from 3 to 4 p.m. the following day.
Effort pantry
The Supplemental Food Resource Center at Effort UMC will be open from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.

Community day
Ross Township’s 10th Community Day Celebration will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Ross Township Park on Anchorage Road in Saylorsburg.
The township wants to promote community involvement and invites residents to come out and meet their neighbors.
It is also a great way to find out about different organizations and a fantastic opportunity to become involved.
Entertainment, demonstrations, old-time photos and artifacts, tradesmen, food and drink, and more are offered.
Progressive dinner
The Southern Connexion Church group of area Methodist churches is hosting a progressive dinner on Saturday, beginning at 4 p.m. with appetizers at St. Peters UMC in Saylorsburg. Then it’s on to stop two at Neola UMC for the salad at 5:15 p.m. The next stop is Effort UMC for the main course at 6:30 p.m.
Dessert will be at McMichaels UMC at 7:45 p.m. Planners are allowing one hour at each church and then 15 minutes to get to the next church. As space is limited to 12 people for each church, it is imperative that one sign up for this event.
’80s night
A Totally ’80s Night is being held at the American Legion in Gilbert on Saturday. The evening’s activities begin at 7 p.m.

Pancake breakfast
Troop 102 will hold its annual pancake breakfast at the American Legion in Gilbert, beginning at 8 a.m. and continuing until noon. There is a cost, depending on age. Children under 5 may eat for free.

Shawl ministry
The prayer shawl ministry of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday in the Teen Room. All are welcome to join.
Fellowship breakfast
Effort UMC’s Trustees are beginning their fellowship breakfast again. The first one, after the summer break, is happening from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Sunday.
Freewill donations will support the capital improvements at the church.
On Sept. 29, many hands at Effort UMC will be involved at the annual chicken barbecue, being served from 3 to 7 p.m., though takeouts will be available beginning at 1 p.m.
Sunday school
• Salem-St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kresgeville will celebrate Rally Day this Sunday, the kickoff of the 2018-19 Sunday school program with the theme of Caring for Creation. It begins with a covered-dish breakfast in Clark Hall between Early Light and the 11 a.m. worship, with the active time from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown will hold its first session, beginning at 10:30 a.m. All will gather together in the social hall and then split up into classes by age group. There are classes for children age 3 through Confirmation.
Anyone with questions or willing to help is asked to contact Coordinator for Spiritual Formation Staci Gower. The church offers a staffed nursery during all worship services.
• At Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville Rally Day is being held. There will be the 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. worship services and a covered dish luncheon afterward to honor and thank local heroes, including fire, ambulance, police, township leaders, political leaders, etc. Each month the focus will be on the things the church can do to take care of the planet.
The kickoff on Sunday will be with games and activities that will be fun and will teach ways to help and protect the earth.
The theme for September is: Reuse and Recycle.

Riders meet
The monthly meeting of the Riders will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the American Legion in Gilbert.

PTO book fair
The Pleasant Valley Intermediate School PTO book fair is scheduled to run all week beginning Monday. Due to the mold remediation, check the school website pvbears.org for updates on when and where the book fair will be held.
Author returns
Award-winning local author Vanessa Blakeslee will return to the Western Pocono Community Library for a discussion of her latest book, “Perfect Conditions,” at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Effort United Methodist’s United Methodist Women will meet at 7 p.m. Monday. This will be a business meeting.

The Knit & Crochet group at Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, will be working on Tuesday, beginning at 1 p.m. Newcomers are welcome.

A Korean War veterans meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert.

Garden Club
The Monroe County Garden Club will meet at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 12 at the Eastern Monroe Public Library, Route 611/North Ninth Street, Stroudsburg. The meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by lunch and the program.
Everyone interested in gardening is welcome to attend. There is a cost for nonmembers, which is applied to membership. Luncheon included.

Mission project
Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is having three mission events open to the public on Sept. 17, Sept. 18 and Sept. 19 at the following locations, respectively: Chestnuthill Township Hall; Sierra View Clubhouse on Allegheny Drive, and the Polk Township Fire Hall in Kresgeville.
Each program begins at 7 p.m. The first one is Sept. 18. It is about the Prodigal Son and will include a lesson and colored pencil drawing. A Gospel reading, a short lesson and a video and then QOP artist and parishioner Jean Perry will help visualize this parable in a hands-on colored pencil drawing. The event is limited to the first 50 people.

Slater’s craft
Mike Piersa, a Pleasant Valley graduate, is a historian at the National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem. He is also the coordinator of the Bangor Quarry Hoist Project, which is working on preserving a 118-year-old mining hoist built in Bangor, part of the slate industry
For more than a decade, he has directed efforts to save the hoist and preserve many other antique machines from local slate quarries.
On Sept. 18, there will be a hands-on demonstration of the slater’s craft at the Museum at 11 a.m.
