Where we live: Pair of Mahoning attractions seek return to glory days

A once-flourishing tennis club is set to have new life injected into it.

Meanwhile, the fate of a deep-rooted golf club continues to hang in the balance.

Valley Royale, located along Mahoning Drive in Mahoning Valley, plans to open in early spring. Formerly the Maple Tree Inn Tennis Club, the facility has been purchased by Jennifer Everett of Lehighton.

A 2010 graduate of Lehighton Area High School, Everett first played and took lessons at the club back when she was in fifth grade.

Everett then went on to play four years on the Lehighton High School tennis team. As a senior, she was named scholar-athlete.

She said she wants to bring a nostalgic feel back to the club, which had been closed since 2016.

Aside from the tennis courts and gardens, the entire first floor of the house will be open to members, which will include two lounges, a dining room and a kitchen. There will also be a small store.

Everett said her plan is to take the club to heights it hasn’t reached since its heyday.

At the opposite end of the spectrum is the Mahoning Valley Country Club.

Located on Country Club Road in Mahoning Township, the once-bustling club closed its doors in March.

As a result, all membership dollars spent for last season were fully reimbursed or transferred as credits to Great Bear Golf Club based on the customers’ desire.

Founded in 1927, the country club was private for almost 80 years before becoming a public course.

According to property records, Bethlehem-based Lehigh Gas Corporation bought the club from a bank in 2010.

Nearly a year since it closed up shop, it doesn’t appear as if any serious suitors have emerged to buy the property.

That’s a shame, because in its heyday, the country club was at one point as popular a destination point in the Mahoning Valley as any.

Here’s hoping the two iconic establishments are one day able to return to their glory days of yesteryear. The tennis club appears to be headed in the right direction. Hopefully the country club isn’t too far behind.

Any place where the 'public' is allowed to 'voice their opinion' online , whether it be Facebook , Twitter , Instagram , or local news sites like this one , you see ridiculous , obnoxious , ignorant , irrational , unreasonable , distorted , twisted , illogical , comments from way too many in our society. It's been a bit disappointing , over the years , ever since the internet came into play , to come and realize there's so many whackos out there. Most of these individuals never had anyone to talk to because of their distorted ignorance , but now get a chance to use these sites as their own personal platform to express their hate , bitterness , anger , and twisted views of the world as we know it. Common sense is rare with so many of these individuals. They use these sites to lash out at others , to 'get even' with society because of their pathetic lives. I've closed my Facebook and Twitter accounts. I will leave this site soon. I'm not here to be exposed to these sort of people. I come to have an intelligent conversation but that's virtually impossible because these sites have been hijacked by losers , loners , viscious individuals who finally found a way to be heard. Well they will not be heard from me. All good people should leave these sites and let all the losers have their irrational debates with each other. Let the blind lead the blind ..... and they'll all fall in the ditch. These people cannot be 'fixed'. They are who they are. They have about as much 'class' as a closed-down school house. I refuse to spend my time , my life , anywhere near bad people. And yes , they are bad people. The internet has opened my eyes to all the ignorance. You always knew it was out there , and now you get to see it up close and personal. This is not for me. I will never waste my time arguing with a fool that lacks common sense. Get help to get peace.
