Year in review: Monroe County Coroner’s office – Year ends with a new beginning

Published December 29. 2017 10:24PM

It was a year of wild accusations and retaliation in the Monroe County coroner’s office.

In August, deputy coroner Lauren Fizz filed a lawsuit against the county, the coroner and his wife/office manager alleging wrongful termination.

On Sept. 8, Chief Deputy Michael Sak filed a suit as well, alleging retaliation for reporting unethical and improper behavior on the part of coroner Bob Allen and his wife/office manager, Kathleen “Traci” Allen. In November Sak’s complaint was amended to include wrongful termination when Sak was fired upon returning to work from Family and Medical Leave.

Both cases are in the discovery phase.

Both Fizz and Sak allege outrageous behavior on the part of Traci Allen. In her complaint, Fizz indicated that Allen was having an intimate affair with a fellow deputy coroner who accused Fizz of inappropriate sexual conduct with a police officer while on duty.

The accusation lead to Fizz being suspended without pay, but Fizz’s complaint states that Allen intercepted and retained her paychecks.

Among the more serious allegations against Traci Allen were that she has created a “sexually hostile” work environment.

Traci Allen is also accused of taking personal property and medication from the recently dead rather than following established protocol for handling property and medication.

Fizz was later terminated.

At the time he filed his suit, Sak had taken leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act due to “stress and anxiety caused by the illegal and unethical actions of Robert and Traci Allen.”

Robert Allen lost his bid to remain in office during November’s general election. Thomas Yanec will be taking over as coroner on Tuesday.
