Year in Review: Palmerton adopts animal law

Published December 29. 2017 10:26PM

Animal lovers came out in droves to contest Palmerton’s consolidated animal ordinance after its adoption in the spring.

The document established numerous regulations for the care of dogs, cats, and other animals, but certain advocates argued that it was riddled with problems.

Humane Society officer and volunteer Donna Crum, amongst others, said restrictions on “feeding stations” would interfere with the care of outdoor animals, as well as cat colonies.

Another regulation on the limit of four pets per household within the borough stirred up some fears that a local government representative would force residents with more animals to sacrifice a beloved cat or dog, though council assured the attendees that this was not the case.

Council President Terry Costenbader asked that anyone who had questions or concerns submit a piece of correspondence, which would be taken under consideration.
