State Sen. John Yudichak, D-Luzerne/Carbon, said Tuesday that he will register as an Independent and caucus with the state's Republican majority.

In a statement detailing his party change, Yudichak said a rise in "purist" politics has caused failure on both sides of the aisle to act on behalf of Pennsylvania residents.

Yudichak referenced Abraham Lincoln's 1863 address at Gettysburg, the site of the Civil War's bloodiest battle, in his announcement. In his speech, which Lincoln delivered 156 years ago to the day, the former president advocated for unity in front of a nation ravaged by division.

Yudichak said America has once again found itself rife with political polarization, except this time, "the new battlefield is in cyberspace," the politician said, and the weapons are "social media platforms."

"Registering as an Independent is the only way I can faithfully and fully serve the people of northeastern Pennsylvania who have blessed me with the opportunity to serve them," Yudichak said.

Speaking with the Times News following the release of his statement, Yudichak called his decision "a culmination" sparked by an "increasingly toxic" political sphere.

"The world is complicated," he said. "Politics is complicated. Issues and problems in our county are complicated. We need to work together from different view points."

As for any future bids for re-election, Yudichak said even as an Independent, his political fate will lie with the voters.

"People will decide," he said.

Yudichak, whose current term ends in 2022, will be the senate's sole Independent. His switch lessens the Democratic caucus to 21, while Republicans currently hold 27 seats.

I hope this starts a trend with fellow PA legislators. The biggest thing is he is now free of political oppression and lobbyist. You can once again PUBLICLY speak out on SD property tax elimination as you once did. I was once on a panel with you on this topic, I saw first hand your passion for the tax shift. Be a leader, drive the cause. https://www.tnonline.com/2013/oct/25/property-tax-reform-crosses-political-lines
This as a victory for the people. Politicians serving the people restores a government of, by and for the people.

I too was on the property tax elimination panel and the community support has been oppressed by political leverage from lobbyists that benefit from the system.

Since then, corruption has been exposed. Transparency is fixing our local governments.

Harrisburg is just one example. Will the proposed school vouchers system be tested in Harrisburg?

Sincerely,

Citizen David F. Bradley Sr.
Democrat's ship is sinking with Hillary at the helm. Out of touch, blocking transparency, deleted emails. Corruption is running rampant.

Ask the Lehighton Area School district board for their emails and watch the oppression.

And Vote Hillary?!? Really?!?, classic. So, she couldn't beat Obama, and then couldn't beat Sanders without cheating, oh, and then Trump, hahahaha. The only thing she can beat is apparently the wrap. Hahaha.

Sincerely,

Citizen David F. Bradley Sr.

I recall your RTK request of e-mails.
Not sure of the local policy, but if those e-mails were on official S.D. (_ _ _ @lehighton.org) you had every right to the e-mails. This is not unusual, especially when the public servant has something to hide. Those folks were certainly hiding something. And fast forward... Over Spending!
That was very fishy, shame on those so called, "public servants".
Drain that swamp!
