Carbon County’s clerk of courts office is under investigation by the state, officials confirmed today.

Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein confirmed that the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office is investigating the clerk of court’s office.

In addition, the county’s insurance carrier, the Pennsylvania Counties Risk Pool, is also conducting an audit of the office.

“There is very, very little we can say at this point,” Nothstein said.

He provided no other comments at this time due to it being an ongoing investigation.

Earlier this month, the county commissioners entered into an agreement with Lehigh County to use two staff members, Jill Herschman and Jordan Kocher, to help the office catch up with its extreme backlog of cases. Herschman and Kocher will be paid $15 per hour and will be under contract with Carbon from Monday through Dec. 31.

At that time, the commissioners aired their frustrations over the mess in the clerk of courts office.

The Carbon Clerk of Courts was William McGinley, who held the office for 28 years until his retirement on May 1. McGinley was re-elected without opposition last November and was only four months into his new term at the time.

The state has yet to approve the Democratic Party’s nomination to fill the vacancy created by McGinley’s retirement. The nomination of Francine Heaney of Nesquehoning remains in the queue waiting to be approved by the governor’s office and state Senate.

Until the appointment is approved by the state, second deputy Julie Harris will remain the acting clerk of courts.

U know it. Hate reading first time offenders getting max jail sentences but than you have people who are repeat offenders getting fines, walking away scott free. My nephew was sentenced to 6 months in jail for his first dui, but the man sentenced right before him who was on his 4th! was given a fine and had his licence suspended 90 days. how the hell in that fair
He is probably a Confidential Informant. There is a lot of them. They turn on their family and friends for dropped charges and lighter sentences if they even get a sentence. Some are stuck in the system for years. Did you ever wonder why the drugs are as bad as they are but none of the big dealers ever get arrested? I can name about 10 people that sell a large amount of drugs and have been for years. If you only knew what's really happening on Hazard Square.
You know im agreeing with you right? Trust me when i say I know whats going on in the courthouse, and its only going to get worse before it gets better. Just a hunch, but I bet the people who have been screwed over for years are going to get vindicated in the end. The way the county keeps people in the system based solely on the fact the system screwed them should be a very telling sign that something is amiss in Hazard Square, and a sign of bigger things to come
I know of drug bust never reported. Our system in carbon county is corrupt big time. From the drug task force down. I know of people that were informants and no longer are and in state facilities. I know of people that should be in jail and are not. We need a complete overhaul of everyone. It's insane. It makes me sick. And I am in Palmerton where a lot goes on that is hidden from the community.
In the chain of accountability, who does this office report to for oversight?

Whats going on in this county is unconstitutional. Being screwed over isn't even the word. They will literally destroy your life !
