A look back: July 26, 1990

Published July 26. 2018 12:22PM

Lehighton school directors are considering what to do with properties in the district not being utilized, or which have been earmarked for closing under the district’s proposed building/renovation program.

Dr. Shirley Ball, superintendent, said she needs the board’s input for direction on all properties in order to prepare a future course of action. The district’s architects have set September 1992, as the completion date for the building program that includes a new high school.

Ball said the board needs to decide what to do with the Franklin Heights, Franklin Elementary and Packerton buildings and the first and third ward elementary buildings and accompanying property.

So what happened to Dr. Shirley Ball?
Why didn't Dr. Ball install a process in which our district maintained the assets of the district purchased, as those did for decades before her? Why were our district building suitably maintained for nearly five decade allowed to be let go? Let go just as the district was getting out of debt?

Why was asset management, financial management and leadership not a priority?

Well, we asked a lot of questions, and didn't get answers. So with the vote of nearly 70% of the community we took many of their seats. We have been fixing these problems that plague the district, fighting the dogma, the oppression and loose applications of the laws.

Look back and ask yourself: The district raised taxes regularly, amassed a monstrous surplus and all the building needed massive repairs. Yet colleges and other government building 4x older still stand strong and proud, respected amd maintained.

How did all that happen with government oversight? And then you will realize why we are here and why it needs fixing. The good ole boy system (and Rita), that has given the administration access to the taxpayer's wallet, without proper oversight has ended.

God Bless America. God bless a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Sincerely,
Citizen David F. Bradley, Sr.
