Dance post prompts accusations

Published October 31. 2019 01:48PM

A Lehighton Area High School freshman and student council representative quieted discussion Monday night on a social media debate over vulgar language used during the school’s homecoming dance.

Nickolas Smith visited Lehighton’s school board meeting to defend chaperones of the event.

On Oct. 14, the Facebook page “Concerned Voices for Lehighton Classrooms” posted, “We have received an alarming number of (private messages) reporting profane and vulgar language and inappropriate behavior at the Homecoming Dance this past Saturday. Apparently, the chaperones did nothing to stop it. If this is true it needs to be reported, immediately. If this is not true, and someone or several someones think it’s funny to pull down the reputation of your school district in this way, it is not. Either way, the district, and the community lose.”

Smith quickly responded with, “I’d just like to say that you need to realize that we are high school students we are more mature and sophisticated and with that being said I think that when it comes to vulgar language it’s not that big of a deal. Honestly we’ve heard it all … the chaperones had different tactics on stopping some inappropriate behavior, and if someone says otherwise they are plain out liars.”

On Monday, Smith reiterated that stance, but also took issue with an email he received from school board Director David Bradley in response to his post.

The email, Smith said, commended him on using his First Amendment rights, but also encouraged him to protect his Fourth, Fifth and 14th Amendment rights.

“None of those amendments had anything to do with what was going on, but the 14th Amendment stuck out more clearly because it deals with equal protection for former slaves,” Smith, an African-American student, said. “My parents and family found that to be a racist comment.”

During Monday’s meeting, Bradley said the reference was not a racial implication, but more a function of students’ rights.

“I feel like students’ rights have been removed inside of these school walls and I firmly believe you should keep those rights,” Bradley told Smith. “As far as the lewd behavior and vulgarity, we have policies, and there is a requirement for every parent, chaperone and staff member to follow those. It is our responsibility as a school board to judge them on how they followed those policies and handled the situation.”

Smith said songs at the dance were played that had some vulgar lyrics, but those lyrics were bleeped out. Some students, however, shouted out the words anyway.

“The chaperones and staff members addressed this immediately,” Smith said. “I don’t think there was a need to judge them in this situation.”

Several students attended the meeting with Smith to support him in his comments before the board.

Bradley told Smith, a student council member, to, “learn about students’ rights so you can be a better advocate for your constituency. A lack of that would be an immoral action.”

“That’s not my job,” Smith responded. “I’m a freshman. I’m a student.”

Board President Larry Stern thanked Smith for addressing the governing body.

“I think you’re a great representative of student council.”

Comments
I'm jealous that Lehighton has no other problems than to worry about teenagers using dirty words. I have to move to that side of the Mansion House.
Regretfully Bob, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Violence, bullying, drugs, selective enforcement, school sponsored vulgar tweets demeaning to women, just to name a few. Lehighton needs to be cleaned up.

Sincerely,

Citizen David F. Bradley Sr.
Nickolas Smith did a great job in addressing the board. Gail and I offered him a seat at the board table as was past practice.

Superintendent Cleaver and President Larry Stern blocked that offer.

Where the school has policies on vulgarity, the question for the community is:

Should the government school sponsor a dance playing vulgar music requiring words to be censored? Or, should they simply pick songs that comply with the school policy?

As for the amendment rederences
The 1st amendment is commonly referred to as the freedom of speech, the fifth is the right to not self incriminate, and 14th is the right to 'due process' and fair equal justice under the law.

In the social media post, (a first amendment right), it was offered as testimony (fifth amendment) that the government school officials played vulgar songs, albeit censored songs. This put them all under the jurisdiction of the board, with the members as the legal judges over these activities occuring in the school. (Fourteenth, the right for due process, in this case, the board room).

Every moment can be a teaching opportunity. The discussion was the lesson in this case.

Nickolas Smith is a wonderful student advocate, good public speaker and an articulate young man. He parents and our community should be proud. I know I am proud to see him share his efforts and get his voice amplified.

The policies are that of the community, they should be followed or changed at the will of the community. The board members are just the public servants that legislate, hiring the administration to enforce, and it is the board that adjudicates the law overseeing the actions of the administration.

This government is loose, corrupt and wasteful. When Larry Stern, and the five, abdicate their lawful authority to the very people they were elected to oversee we get the chaos shown here.

Sincerely,

Citizen David F. Bradley Sr.
Good job Nick!
Maybe a town hall meeting where all in attendance can decide a playlist for up coming dances?
Anybody from the 80s and up ever sing the “chorus” to Mony Mony or Sweet Caroline at a school dance. Same thing.
Quick, call Ren McCormack!
Footloose with the spending, increases in budgets, taxes and debt are the big concerns.

The Hometown Tax team is taking all the senior's bacon.
I met Nick for the second time at the Board Meeting, the first time he came up and introduced himself to me. Both times I found him to be well-spoken, polite and respectful. An exceptional young man who will go far in life. His family, friends, fellow students, teachers, and the community should all be proud of him. And I'm sure that is the case. I look forward to seeing him again at another meeting should he have any questions or concerns about his school district.
Lehighton’s mascot is an Indian, but you want to choose to be politically correct with musical lyrics? Let’s at least be consistent; the new mascot can be changed to a Teletubby and, then, in good conscience, you can censure whomever you wish. Everyone can hold hands and talk about their feelings, too. What a utopia that would be! It’s just a bunch of old people complaining about kids, these days, and their loud, vulgar music. Where’s Dee Snider, when you need him?
As an outsider, I'll say it as it is...
Dear Mr. Smith,
In the age of "Hate Speech" legislation, every word spoken or sang out, are, as you put it, "a big of a deal."
If we are going to live in a PC country, as you will young man, you better learn now to measure your every word. Thanks for attending a SB Meeting. Good for you! Proud of you.
I decided to visit the page that made the original post. It seems the Times News, when they quoted that post here, left off the last sentence. That last sentence was this, "If true, file a complaint with the Administration as well as the Pennsylvania Department of Education. If not, stop the lies, now." How about reporting all the facts? Not just what favors the incumbents?
End the corruption and waste

Oh, and Dee Snider.

Doesn't anyone else want to see what the district is hiding in the blocked financial documents?
