Monroe County Commissioners proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month
In a proclamation signed on Oct. 3 the Monroe County Commissioners proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
In doing so the commissioners applauded the vision of the Women’s Resources of Monroe County to end domestic violence for all women, children and adults in the county.
“Since 2017 the agency has provided 4,959 hours of counseling and advocacy services,” it read. “One hundred and thirty-two adults and children were provided safety from domestic violence through 4,779 nights of shelter.”
The commissioners commended the Women’s Resources of Monroe County for its valuable contribution to doing its part to end domestic violence and sexual assault in the county.
Commissioners’ Chairman John Moyer said that in recent budget meetings the District Attorney’s office requested additional funding for combating domestic violence and human trafficking.
“We are seeing an increase,” Moyer said. “But we are also seeing an increase in opioid use and in other areas. We have a lot to consider.”
Moyer presented the proclamation to Women’s Resources Prevention and Outreach Coordinator Jessie Bell and Executive Director Lauren Peterson.
Moyer praised them for the work they do for the residents of Monroe County.
