Walnutport agrees to buy two more handguns for police officers

Walnutport will purchase two additional handguns for its police officers after being taken to task by a borough resident.

On a unanimous vote, borough council agreed at its workshop on Thursday to buy the handguns at a cost of about $900.

Borough police Chief Pete Wayda told council his department needs to order the handguns.

However, council initially said it would prefer to hold off on the purchase for the time being.

That prompted resident Jeanne Boehrer to question how the borough couldn’t afford to spend $900 for the handguns.

“That would be highly unacceptable,” said Boehrer, who added that she didn’t agree with how council presented itself on the matter.

Councilwoman Patrice Hunsicker said she understood where Boehrer was coming from.

“It sounds like we don’t have money,” Hunsicker said. “It did not come across very well.”

Borough Mayor Wayne Weidner said that if Wayda were to say that he needed the handguns immediately, he would support that request on the spot.

After some more discussion on the matter, council made a motion to buy the two handguns.

Afterward, council then rescinded a prior motion it made earlier in the meeting to replace three desktop computers in the police station with Nook desktops.

Council originally agreed to spend $4,379 for the Nook desktops, but then opted against doing so after it agreed to buy the two handguns.

Council President William Turk told Boehrer that council tries to be mindful of the borough’s finances.

Now if only the borough can put some money towards infrastructure. The demise of View Drive is disturbing. God for bid something tragic occurs to those tax payers in that area of the borough. The ambulance, fire equipment, or police would struggle to navigate that road. Please before something happens, fix that road!
View Dr is a private road not owned by the borough I believe I have heard before. And if that is the case it would need to be leased or sold to the borough for them to take care of it.
I will be speaking to attorneys to get to the bottom of this safety issue. If the borough knows about this issue, takes tax payer money for providing no services, they then can be held some liability should a tragedy occur. There is gross negligence on somebodys part. If the borough never approved this private road for access to property owners, then how were the buildings/homes ever approved by the borough in the first place. Someone ignored building codes and statutes a long time ago. Obviously access needs to occur for police, ambulance, and fire personnel. Its a dangerous situation.
2 articles that cited that it is not owned by the borough.

Since they do not own it they do not have to maintain it. I know that they do back up it and salt the very bottom so no one slides onto 145 in the winter causing accidents. But unless they own the road why should they be responsible for it. Unfortunately you were not informed of this when you purchased your property and that falls into the previous owners and realtor. Those are things that should be disclosed to a potential buyer. As well as it's not impossible for the fire department and ambulance to get up there as we have in the past. And because there are no hydrants on the road it already has a special response initially added right away for fires. I think inquiries to the borough 9f who owns it and any help they may be to get it repaired is warranted. They are very reasonable as long as you dont go just ranting and raving that you want something done and now.....
