Mansion House closures to end Friday

This is the final week of a full daytime closure on the Mansion House Hill between Jim Thorpe and Lehighton.
Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman Ron Young confirmed Monday that the contractor completing a rock removal project along Route 209 will lift the regular weekday 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. closure as of the end of the day on Friday.
Road-Con, of West Chester, has been in charge of the $3.55 million project, which began in the spring. Ameritech Slope Contractors, one of the only companies in the country that handles this type of work, is performing the rock scaling operation. Crews have removed loose rock, placed around 700 rock anchors and installed mesh along the wall.
While motorists will no longer have to navigate around the Mansion House Hill, they won’t find the road completely back to normal on Monday.
“The contractor will close one of the two lanes going up the mountain while they continue work on the project,” Young said in an email. “This 24-hour/7-day a week lane restriction will likely continue through May.”
At some point in the next month, crews plan to start weekday daytime restrictions, likely 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., where only one lane will be open with flaggers controlling northbound and southbound traffic through the one-lane area.
“This daily one-lane pattern will last through May,” Young said.
PennDOT said it will give advance notice prior to those daytime restrictions going into effect.
