Nesquehoning council

Nesquehoning Borough Council, at its meeting on Wednesday, acted on or discussed the following items:

• Adopted a dangerous animal control ordinance.

• Approved selling the nine police handguns. In the sale, five would be sold to the full-time officers who expressed interest at a cost of $235 a gun; while the remaining four would be sold to any interested borough employee and if any remain, an interested former borough police officer or the public.

• Approved the purchase of nine new holsters at a cost of $100 to $125 each. The money from the sale of the firearms would be used to cover the purchase. Any remaining money then would be put into the general fund.

• For the month of September, the police collected $4,427.28; issued 49 citations; had 517 incidents reported and drove 3,163 miles while on patrol.

• John McArdle, borough emergency management coordinator, announced that the dry hydrants have been replaced in the Hauto Valley Estates pond. He also recommended council provide a donation to the Ryan Township divers for their help.

• Ratified the appointment of Samantha Zlock to the recreation commission.

• Approved the recreation commission’s bylaws and announced that the commission will be holding a children’s Halloween bingo at the rec center, 335 W. Railroad St., on Sunday. Doors open at noon and bingo starts at 1 p.m.

• Approved the Encova workers’ compensation physician list.

• Approved the five-year Teamsters contract.

• Announced that PPL has begun removing and adding streetlights in the borough that council requested be moved. This is the first part in the conversion project to change all lights to LED.
