Resident asks W. Penn to ban 4-wheelers at night

Published February 09. 2018 05:05AM

A West Penn Township man has asked officials to pass an ordinance that would forbid people from four-wheeling at night.

Resident Gary Steigerwalt told supervisors on Monday people have been 4-wheeling on his property at 2, 3, and 4 in the morning.

“I just think it would help eliminate the problem,” Steigerwalt said. “They were doing it in the daytime hours, now they’re doing it at nighttime.”

Steigerwalt, who lives on a farm, said there have been instances of several people who have been poaching deer.

Board Chairman Tony Prudenti said he believes the matter is more of a police issue.

Board solicitor Paul J. Datte said he doesn’t believe the township can adopt an ordinance prohibiting anyone from 4-wheeling.

Datte told Steigerwalt that if he can see who the riders are, he can record it and tell police.

Township police Chief Brian Johnson said he would discuss the matter with the Pennsyvania Game Commission.

Thank you Mr. Steigerwalt for the times you've tolerated respectful 4-wheelers accessing your property. It says a lot about your character and faith in your neighbors.

For the disrespectful scumbags running over your property in the middle of the night. I hope they stop. They're ruining it for everyone else. I like 4 wheeling as much as the next guy, but would never consider trespassing.

I'm in my late 40's and have heard decades of stories about wheeling late at night. Almost all of those stories involved, in addition to trespassing, other illegal activities such as drinking and vandalism. Another thing you learn later in life is unless you're at work there's nothing good happening on the street after 11PM. So I suspect your concern is some of this activity is happening or is going to happen on your property.

It's too bad it's not as simple as calling the police and saying there's some trespassers on my farm-how about you come have a look. Don't know that an ordinance would work. It's already illegal to trespass and poach deer.

Sorry for your trouble Mr. Steigerwalt. No good deed goes unpunished.
