Robert W. Miller Jr. of Mahoning Township has announced his candidacy for re-election to a second term as the coroner of Carbon County. He is seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination in the May 21 primary election.

Miller grew up in Franklin Township as the son of the late Robert and Virginia (Kern) Miller. Both of his parents and his grandfather held the title of tax collector in Franklin Township.

Miller is a lifelong resident of Carbon County, graduating from Lehighton Area High School and Drexel University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics and a minor in anatomy.

Miller holds lifetime memberships in the Lehighton Fire Department, the Mahoning Valley Volunteer Fire Company, the Mahoning Township Lions Club, and is a member of the Six-County Eastern PA EMS Critical Incident Stress Management team. He is the hazardous materials officer and the radiological defense officer in the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency, and is chairman of the county’s Local Emergency Planning Committee.

Miller is a founder and director of the Mahoning Valley Ambulance Association Inc. and has been a certified Emergency Medical Technician going on 47 years.

Miller began his career at the New Jersey Zinc Company, achieved a safety supervisor position, and was an industrial hygiene consultant. He provided industrial hygiene consultations to clients all over the country, and in 2010 he spent the summer in New Orleans assisting in the cleanup of the oil spill, after which he retired.

Miller has had 31 years of service for the Carbon County Coroner’s Office, with the last four years as coroner. He has been the investigator for over 1,200 death cases. Miller and all of his deputies, who perform death investigations, are certified and trained under the state Office of the Attorney General in Medicolegal Death Investigations.

He is married to Diana Fabian of Palmerton. They have four children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Miller said, “I plan to continue the progress that has been made over the past couple years in the Coroner’s Office, and I also want to continue to provide professional service to the residents of Carbon County.”
